Rainbow Six Siege (and Mobile) Coming to China Soon

As a seasoned gamer with a rich history of navigating the global gaming landscape, I must say the news about Rainbow Six Siege and Rainbow Six Mobile entering the Chinese market is both exhilarating and intriguing. Having been around long enough to remember the initial stir caused by China’s apparent “censorship” of certain elements in Rainbow Six Siege, it’s fascinating to see how far we’ve come since then.

It’s been announced that both Rainbow Six Siege and Rainbow Six Mobile have received approval for release in China, with Tencent serving as the publisher. It is anticipated that China will operate a closed-door client managed by Tencent, meaning players wanting to connect with users outside of the country may require a VPN.

Over the past few years, China has seen an increase in the number of games it is acquiring. Recently, it was made official that Activision Blizzard’s games will re-enter the Chinese market due to a fresh publishing partnership struck between AB and NetEase in April.

Rainbow Six, But In China

For nearly a decade, allegations have surfaced that Ubisoft, the developer of Rainbow Six Siege, has been modifying or eliminating certain content related to death, drugs, and nudity in the game, supposedly to cater to a potential Chinese market. The game is still yet to be released in China, and it’s unclear if any adjustments will be made to the global version of Rainbow Six Siege as a result.

Up until this point, Chinese gamers have found ways to bypass the limitations to acquire a PC version of the game (significantly modified).

Great news! Both the PC version of @Rainbow6Game and the mobile version @Rainbow6Mobile have been officially approved in China. This means that you can now enjoy these games on your preferred device.

Of greater significance, China is granted immediate access to Rainbow Six Mobile upon its launch, due to this forward-thinking approval. The anticipated release of Rainbow Six Mobile is slated for Q2 2025, though the specific date continues to change. Given the vast market for mobile games in China, this could offer an intriguing opportunity for esports development within the region.
