Ubisoft is planning a significant shift for the accessibility of Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, turning part of it into a free-to-play game. In honor of its ten-year anniversary, the popular multiplayer shooter, which was first released in 2015, is unveiling plans that suggest the future direction for this renowned title.
Due to its unique blend of intense firefights and unprecedented environmental damage, Rainbow Six Siege has earned a reputation as one of the top games in the Tom Clancy series. Over the past decade, countless gamers have assumed control over some of the game’s legendary Team Rainbow Operators and wreaked havoc on close-quarter settings with epic gun battles. Now, the game is about to undergo its “most significant transformation yet” with Rainbow Six Siege X, a major update slated for release in 2025. This extensive revamp aims to pave the way for another ten years of ongoing Rainbow Six Siege development, and everyone – both at Ubisoft and within the Siege player community – is eagerly anticipating the changes that Siege X will bring.
The upcoming update for Rainbow Six Siege, referred to as Siege X, could significantly broaden the game’s player base by introducing a free-to-play mode. This mode, labeled “Free Access,” will let gamers download and start playing without initially having to pay anything. Prior to its official release, interested players can get a sneak peek of Ubisoft’s plans by joining the Siege X closed beta testing.
Rainbow Six Siege X Free-to-Play Option Will Have Limited Roster and Modes
Transitioning Rainbow Six Siege into a free-to-play game could make it comparable to other multiplayer shooters such as Call of Duty Warzone and Overwatch 2, but there are some restrictions associated with the free access tier. Ubisoft has announced that this tier will only provide access to 10 operable characters, with progress enabling an additional 16 for a total of 26 characters. Given that Rainbow Six Siege currently features over 74 playable operators, free access players will miss out on numerous character choices. Furthermore, the free access tier only grants access to Unranked, Quick Play, and the upcoming Dual Front mode; more competitive modes like Ranked and the Siege Cup are exclusive to “premium access” players.
In the second season of Year 10, starting around mid-2025, both the “Rainbow Six Siege X” update and free access to the game will be made available. Previously, we saw the start of Year 10 Season 1, implying that the release of “Siege X” and free entry is imminent. The announcement has been met with enthusiasm from many players on Twitter and Bluesky, who are eagerly anticipating their first experience with “Rainbow Six Siege”. Notably, Ranked play will continue to be reserved for more committed “Siege” enthusiasts.
