Rainbow Six Siege X Directors Comment on Possible Return to Single-Player

In December 2025, Rainbow Six Siege will celebrate its 10th anniversary – a significant milestone for any game, especially considering its continued popularity. The game had a rocky start, with initial problems and a lack of content, but Ubisoft consistently listened to players and released updates and new features. This dedication dramatically improved the game, shaping it into what it is today, and it looks like Ubisoft has plenty more planned for the future, even after a decade.

Ten years ago, Rainbow Six Siege was a very different game than it is today. Regular seasonal updates have kept the content fresh, but many players are most drawn to its intense, strategic gameplay. To mark the game’s 10th anniversary, Game Rant interviewed creative director Alexander Karpazis and game director Joshua Mills to discuss whether Rainbow Six might ever return to offering a dedicated single-player campaign.

Rainbow Six Siege’s Origins

Rainbow Six Siege actually started as a different game called Rainbow 6: Patriots. Announced in 2011, Patriots was meant to be a story-focused tactical shooter with cutscenes and pre-planned events. Unfortunately, development stalled and the game was eventually canceled. However, the team didn’t start from scratch. A smaller group kept some of the original ideas and shifted the focus to multiplayer gameplay and lasting replayability, which ultimately became the foundation for Rainbow Six Siege.

Since its release in 2015, Rainbow Six Siege has become increasingly popular, but some longtime fans miss the series’ single-player campaigns. Though the game occasionally features cooperative events, many are wondering if a full single-player mode will ever be added to Rainbow Six.

Rainbow Six’s Possible Single-Player Future

Game Rant spoke with creative director Alexander Karpazis and game director Joshua Mills to find out if the game might return to a single-player format and if they would be interested in developing it that way.

The team understands there’s a dedicated audience who would love to see a return to single-player gameplay, given the series’ history and passionate fans. More importantly, bringing back single-player appears to unlock a lot of exciting possibilities, as Mills points out.

I’m really excited about the future and seeing what new things we can create. Rainbow Six Siege is a significant piece of that, but it’s important to remember it’s built on a solid base, and that base is what allows us to keep growing.

Beyond simply maintaining its existing appeal, the game is also focused on expanding its reach to new players. The number of playable characters in Rainbow Six Siege has grown significantly and become very diverse. Each character has a rich backstory within the game’s world, which Ubisoft continues to develop through things like blog posts and animated shorts. As a result, many characters have become popular with fans, and some have even appeared in the spin-off game, Rainbow Six Extraction.

Ubisoft put a lot of effort into creating distinctive characters, and they recognize the potential for using them in more projects. As Karpazis points out,

It would be a shame to keep these characters stuck in a siege setting forever. Given how long the game has been running and its potential, I’ve learned not to rule anything out. If players really want to see more, we’ll definitely consider it in the future.

Ubisoft is definitely considering bringing back a single-player mode, though no decisions have been made yet. It’s a logical step, given that the Rainbow Six series historically focused on single-player and cooperative experiences. While earlier games had a dedicated fanbase, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Vegas, released in 2006, really popularized the franchise. It received excellent reviews, won many awards, and was a major commercial success for Ubisoft.

As a huge fan, it’s amazing how quickly Siege became the biggest game in the Rainbow Six series! It totally blew past all the previous titles, and honestly, it’s still going strong after all this time. They even gave it a massive update with Rainbow Six Siege X – the lighting, sound, and everything just feels so much more modern and polished now.

The future looks bright for the Rainbow Six series, but Ubisoft hasn’t yet shared its long-term vision. Until the developers make an official announcement, fans are relying on recent rumors and leaks to get a sense of what’s next.
