The head of Gearbox Software, Randy Pitchford, has confessed that he’s feeling a bit apprehensive about the potential toughness of Borderlands 4. It appears this upcoming game in the series might be more demanding than its predecessors. However, despite his concerns that it could be too hard for some players, there seems to be an easier option available within the game itself.
Upon its 2019 release, Borderlands 3 sold well, yet fan response to the final game in the series was not as positive as expected. While the gameplay received positive reviews, the writing – a key element in the Borderlands series – was often criticized for falling short compared to previous games. Although one mistake can sometimes be forgiven by fans, it does place expectations high for Borderlands 4 to deliver an impressive performance.
Randy Pitchford is Nervous About Borderlands 4’s Difficulty
At Gamescom 2025, I had an engaging conversation with Insider Gaming about the degree of challenge players might encounter on the launch day of Borderlands 4. I shared my apprehensions because there are certain sections in Borderlands 4 that will be tougher, but what’s truly exciting about this game, given its RPG format, is that if anything feels a bit challenging for you, you can simply immerse yourself in some grinding and level up, making yourself more formidable. I also mentioned that we cater to a wide array of players – many who aren’t drawn to intricate, hard challenges, but instead delight in exploring the Borderlands or interacting with the characters.
In this context, Borderlands 4 continues the conventional formula of the Borderlands series by allowing players to revisit and repetitively fight in specific areas to gain an edge for upcoming battles, or return to past bosses to reflect on their progression. Pitchford further explained that the game will present challenges that were initially difficult for newcomers but will become insignificant as players grow stronger. However, he emphasized that the difficulty level has been significantly increased, particularly in boss fights and battle mechanics. Although Borderlands games are not renowned for their extreme difficulty, it’s intriguing to see how Gearbox has intensified challenges in Borderlands 4 to a degree that slightly worries Pitchford about player reactions.
As a devoted fan counting down the final weeks before Borderlands 4, it seems like we’re uncovering more and more about this highly anticipated game. Recently, we learned that Borderlands 4 won’t feature cross-save or cross-progression at launch, which has left some of us who aim to traverse platforms a bit disheartened. Here’s hoping there are still some exciting revelations in store when the game drops on September 12!
