As a big Resident Evil fan, it’s amazing how many games there are! If you just count the main series – not the extra spin-offs – there are 10 full games to experience. And yes, that includes Resident Evil 0, which tells the story leading right up to the very first game!
It’s true that not every Resident Evil game has been a success. Some have clear weaknesses that make them stand out negatively compared to the stronger titles in the series.
We’re deciding which Resident Evil game is the best, considering its characters, story, and how fun it is to play. What’s your favorite?
10. Resident Evil 6
Fall From Grace
The Resident Evil series was doing well until Resident Evil 6 was released. While some criticize Resident Evil 5, the sixth game was a significant step down in quality.
Okay, so a lot of Resident Evil fans were pretty upset with Resident Evil 6, and honestly, I get why. It felt like they totally ditched the scary, survival horror stuff and just went all-in on action. Seriously, it’s basically a run-and-gun shooter for a lot of it, and that’s not what most of us were expecting from a Resident Evil game.
Resident Evil 6 did introduce some cool finishing moves for Leon that were later used in Resident Evil Requiem, but overall, it wasn’t a strong installment in the series and disappointed many fans.
9. Resident Evil 0
The Prequel
Let’s talk about horror games again – Resident Evil 0 is a notable example. It’s the first game to introduce the character Rebecca Chambers, and many fans really enjoy it.
While the game has a strong horror atmosphere, many players find the story weak and easily forgotten. Common complaints also include frustrating boss fights and enemies, and some feel the game’s levels are too similar to areas from the original Spencer Mansion.
Even though the game has significant flaws, it offers some replay value with Wesker mode, features some of the most original puzzles in the series, and delivers genuinely scary moments, particularly during the train sequence.
8. Resident Evil 5
Co-op Campaign
Resident Evil 5 was the first major installment to let two players team up – one as Chris and one as Sheva. But the game isn’t as enjoyable if you play it alone.
The computer-controlled partner can be annoying, frequently wasting ammunition and sometimes not responding when you need her to. Plus, the game’s controls feel old-fashioned – you have to stand still to shoot, which can be awkward.
Despite its flaws, Resident Evil 5 offers more engaging action than Resident Evil 6, and it has some good story arcs, particularly with the reappearances of Jill and Wesker.
7. Resident Evil 3 (Remake)
Nemesis
As a long-time Resident Evil fan, when I talk about the older games, I’m actually thinking about the remakes – they’re just so much better visually and gameplay-wise. Of all the remakes so far, though, I have to say Resident Evil 3 is probably the least impressive to me. It’s still good, but doesn’t quite reach the heights of the others.
Jill and Carlos are both compelling characters, and their interactions add a lot to the story. Plus, the game is fast-paced and doesn’t feel drawn out, which is a real plus.
This remake is considered the weakest of the recent Resident Evil games due to its limited puzzles, significant cuts from the original game, and a less intimidating version of the Nemesis enemy.
6. Resident Evil (Remake)
The Classic
Resident Evil first came out in the 1990s. A remake followed in the early 2000s, and it remains highly regarded, with the Spencer Mansion often cited as a key location when people discuss the game series.
Man, this game is where I first met Chris, Jill, Wesker, and Barry – seriously iconic characters that everyone remembers. But it wasn’t just the characters, it was the whole vibe. The scares were perfectly timed, the puzzles were clever and different, and the characters had some seriously funny lines. It’s a game I still think about fondly.
If you can look past the outdated and sometimes clumsy character interactions, it’s clear this game reflects the technology and design sensibilities of its era. The horror elements and gameplay feel quite different from the more polished and refined third-person experiences the series offers today.
5. Resident Evil 2 (Remake)
Hello Leon
Resident Evil 2 is where players first encounter the iconic characters Claire Redfield and Leon Kennedy. When they arrive in Raccoon City, they soon find themselves trapped inside the police station, frantically searching for an escape.
Resident Evil 2 is considered a standout title in the series thanks to its compelling mix of puzzles, action, and horror. The introduction of Mr. X, a relentless enemy who pursues you throughout the game, significantly heightened the tension and fear as you explored the police station.
Okay, so Resident Evil 2 is amazing overall, but there are a couple things that bugged me. That sewer section? Ugh, not fun. And chasing Mr. X around could get really frustrating, honestly. It also feels like some stuff from the original game is missing, which is a little disappointing.
4. Resident Evil 7
The Bakers
After the Resident Evil series seemed to be shifting towards action, Resident Evil 7 surprised players by returning to its horror roots. The game puts you in the shoes of Ethan Winters as he desperately tries to escape the terrifying Baker house.
Okay, so Resident Evil 7 is seriously one of the scariest games in the whole series, and I loved how different each member of the Baker family was – they really made the experience unique. But honestly, it wasn’t perfect. I wish there were more puzzles to solve, the game felt a bit weirdly paced at times, and I was hoping for more types of enemies to fight. It was great, but those things held it back a little.
Even so, not many games in the Resident Evil series create the same level of suspense and fear as those played from a first-person perspective.
3. Resident Evil Village
The Return of Ethan Winters
Resident Evil Village is the eighth major installment in the Resident Evil series and concludes the story of Ethan Winters. It’s a surprisingly replayable game, offering challenges for speedrunners, different difficulty levels, and plenty of unlockable items to collect.

Similar to Resident Evil 7, Village uses a first-person perspective, which really amps up the horror. The developers clearly learned from past games, delivering a wide range of enemies, including the incredibly popular villain, Lady Dimitrescu.
Okay, so Resident Evil Village isn’t quite as terrifying as some of the older games, and it’s a bit more straightforward in how you progress. But honestly? It’s still one of the best Resident Evil experiences I’ve had. It really delivers!
2. Resident Evil Requiem
Almost Perfect
Resident Evil Requiem, the ninth main game in the series, is nearly flawless. It expertly combines thrilling horror, a genuinely unsettling atmosphere, and enjoyable action. You experience the story through the eyes of both main characters, Grace and Leon, offering unique perspectives on the same events.
Playing as Grace focuses on classic horror – feeling scared and trying to survive. Leon offers a more action-packed experience, letting you fight back against enemies and get your revenge, especially those you couldn’t defeat while playing as Grace.
Resident Evil Requiem is an incredibly replayable game with clever puzzles, a terrifying enemy that relentlessly pursues you, and plenty of action. It’s a truly exceptional title and easily one of the best in the Resident Evil series.
1. Resident Evil 4 (Remake)
Pointless Backflips
Resident Evil 4 is arguably the most famous and highly-regarded game in the entire Resident Evil series. It’s the game that truly made Leon Kennedy a recognizable hero.
Resident Evil 4 masterfully combines horror and action, and the remake enhances both. It addresses shortcomings of the original game, and updated controls make combat smoother and more responsive, giving players a greater sense of control.
The game offers a lot of replay value thanks to side quests, a New Game Plus mode, and plenty of unlockable items. However, the game’s island setting can sometimes feel a little too long.
