Horror video games, much like the shape-shifting monster from ‘The Thing’, masterfully blend and incorporate elements of fear in unexpected yet effective ways. Labeling a game like ‘Resident Evil 4’ as a horror game may seem questionable due to its perceived lack of terror compared to others, but this doesn’t diminish its ability to provoke fear. For instance, Resident Evil 4 is classified as a survival horror game, yet some might find it less frightening than other games. On the contrary, games such as ‘Little Nightmares‘ and ‘Little Nightmares 2’, while visually stunning with their unique 2.5D art style, are not exactly sources of cheer or pleasure. In fact, Little Nightmares tells chilling tales without any dialogue at all, managing to instill dread without relying on traditional methods of storytelling.
In a nutshell, the enchanting allure of Tarsier’s “Little Nightmares” series, including the upcoming “Little Nightmares 3” from Supermassive, has echoes of Studio Ghibli’s “Spirited Away”. This is because while these games have a puzzle-platformer ambiance, they aren’t as overtly frightening. In contrast, Tarsier Studios’ latest project, “Reanimal”, demonstrates that “Little Nightmares” actually leans towards the tame side. From the trailer for its new release window, it appears that Tarsier is venturing into realms with “Reanimal” that “Little Nightmares” never dared to explore.
Reanimal is Little Nightmares on Steroids
Until next year, it’s uncertain if the distinction between Reanimal and Little Nightmares will be for better or worse, but Reanimal abandoning Little Nightmares’ playful, ethereal atmosphere in favor of gloomy shadows is a definite way to set them apart. Additionally, the focus on at least one large animal carcass fusion is another distinguishing factor, especially when their visual aesthetics and gameplay appear strikingly similar at first glance.
It’s quite possible that the gameplay details of Reanimal resemble a new installment or spin-off of Little Nightmares, if not for its significantly darker tone. The narrative journey in Reanimal, where you play as brother and sister to rescue your lost friends, might end tragically or ominously, much like the endings of both Little Nightmares and Little Nightmares 2, as Tarsier Studios has demonstrated in their previous games.

In contrast to the first game, Little Nightmares 2 delves deeper into sorrowful and terrifying themes. However, amidst the darkness, there’s a cheerful customization option that allows players to dress up Mono with different headgear such as hats or masks.
Due to Tarsier choosing to stick closely to the visual style it has developed while intensifying its darker shades, it appears as though this decision was made to accomplish what it felt it couldn’t in the game Little Nightmares, or perhaps to illustrate where the atmosphere of Little Nightmares might have progressed if it had continued working on the franchise. This choice indicates that Tarsier no longer requires Little Nightmares and is now free to innovate on its own, creating horror elements that may not fit in a series as delightfully bizarre and otherworldly as Little Nightmares.
It’s exciting to know that we’ll soon have another game in the Little Nightmares series, titled Little Nightmares 3. This upcoming release will create an even starker contrast with Reanimal when it launches in Q1 2026, as both games share a common co-op functionality. Interestingly, Little Nightmares 2 had Six as an NPC companion, which was a commitment to the series’ cooperative gameplay. In terms of combat, Little Nightmares 2 involved players defending themselves using various objects found in scripted sequences.

In comparison to the creatures in Little Nightmares, Reanimal’s designs might not initially seem very frightening. However, it’s the context and what each gameplay sequence involves that will ultimately decide how terrifying Reanimal turns out to be. It’s likely that Tarsier Studios is striving to make the gameplay itself more intense while maintaining a chilling atmosphere and tone. Still, there’s a possibility that the Little Nightmares games could end up being even more horrifying overall. Regardless, Reanimal by Tarsier Studios can be seen as an experiment in creating a horror genre with the potential to spawn a series of intriguing, mysterious games.
