Reaper Actual Has Blockchain Features, and I Spoke to the Developer to Figure Out Why—INTERVIEW

Reaper Actual is a forthcoming open-world first-person shooter game, which includes persistence as one of its features. This means that in the future, it can support several hundred players on a single server. Additionally, it offers a dynamic ecosystem that changes with time, weather conditions, and faction interactions. Best of all, this game will be free to play! Moreover, it’s designed for gamers regardless of their skill level.

Initially, some gamers might be taken aback when they discover that the game Reaper Actual incorporates blockchain and NFT features. Frankly, this aspect worried me as well, but after conversing with the team at Distinct Possibility Studios during Gamescom, I felt compelled to reach out to them again to clarify any doubts about the NFT functionalities in Reaper Actual.

I’m glad to confirm that, after understanding the whole process, I feel reassured that there won’t be any issues arising.

Here’s the full video interview, if you’d rather see it that way:

Getting Into the Blockchain with Reaper Actual

In simpler terms, Reaper Actual combines features from different types of shooter games such as those in the Call of Duty series, open-world shooters like Escape from Tarkov, and extraction shooters. It’s being created by developers who have previously worked on popular titles like PlanetSide and H1Z1. The game is intended to be constantly changing and expanding, with a dynamic meta and a plethora of customization options available.

It may come as a surprise to some that Reaper Actual incorporates aspects tied to blockchain technology in the game. To be honest, I’m not entirely familiar with this domain, but I understand enough to acknowledge that for certain gamers, this can serve as a significant concern or issue.

I recently had a chat with Matt Higby, co-founder and the creative mastermind behind Distinct Possibility Studios, to get the lowdown on how those NFT mechanics are woven into the fabric of Reaper Actual. Here’s a glimpse of what we discussed!

In the virtual world of the game, you’ll be able to acquire distinct, standalone units called ‘bases’. These bases serve as individual properties with their own unique addresses. Imagine them as elevators in a skyscraper or entrances to a bunker complex – multiple players can possess bases within the same location, but each one is different and unique, much like fingerprints.

As a devoted player, I’ve come to appreciate how this game stands out. Unlike others, it not only begins with an exceptional default base but also cumulates all the enhancements we, the players, add to it throughout our gaming journey.

If you enhance your base to manufacture top-tier sniper rifles, which requires a certain amount of time, money, and resources to upgrade, you have the option to sell this base. Instead of stripping out all the upgrades if you choose to do so, you can package the base along with the installed modifications for resale.

In Higby’s own terms, it refers to an enhancement in ownership within Reaper Actual, enabling players to exercise some financial authority over their bases, which they spend time and effort constructing. During our conversation about these bases, I also discovered that the game characters, known as Reapers, can be listed as NFTs once they have been upgraded and developed by the players after being upgraded and evolved.

As a gamer, here’s how I’d put it: In this game, I can create and trade one-of-a-kind characters known as Reapers. These guys are distinctly different due to their unique permutations. They each possess a blend of traits that make them appealing for diverse roles and missions depending on the situation.

Through their personal biography, distinctive name, and appearance, they possess a uniquely captivating blend of elements. This combination is effortlessly communicated and serves as a valuable trading asset. The convenience lies in the non-fungible token (NFT) functionality, which encapsulates all these unique characteristics within a single digital asset securely stored on a blockchain.

But Are NFTs Optional in Reaper Actual?

As Matt and I ventured into Reaper Actual, I discovered the astonishingly practical aspects of its blockchain mechanics. Players can invest significant time constructing a base, only to later sell it to others who prefer purchasing pre-made bases instead of spending hours building their own. This resembles a property market in many ways.

Matt explained further:

We’re trying to emphasize the personal ownership aspect when it comes to NFTs, as they often get criticized for being solely seen as a speculative investment. People have strong opinions about this topic, and some see them only as a means for financial transactions, while others may view them differently.

In reality, a lot of these mechanics can be utility-granting and utility-oriented, right?

In another perspective, while practicality is a key factor, consider the flexibility too; not everyone finds NFTs appealing, and in the gaming community, they’ve often been perceived as a ghost story. I inquired Matt about whether it was possible to play Reaper Actual without diving into the blockchain aspect of it.

Absolutely, let me clarify. The game will be playable on both Steam and Epic Games Store platforms. However, you won’t find any Web3 features in these environments. Rest assured, all functionalities will remain identical.

Although the type of currency may change, there will still be distinctly unique Reapers. You’ll retain the ability to enhance and sell your property, but you’ll be doing so with a new form of exchange.

It’s essential for us to demonstrate that blockchain principles can serve as a powerful tool for beneficial purposes rather than merely greed-driven, and that there lies genuine value in employing them. One undeniable fact about this game is that it offers an entirely unique gaming experience unlike any other you’ve encountered before.

If individuals truly enjoy immersing themselves in persistent world games, they might consider venturing over to a Web3 service for an enhanced experience, should they wish to do so.

At Distinct Possibility Studios, we’re excited to make NFT mechanics available for those interested, yet it’s entirely optional and has no impact on the overall enjoyment of the game.

As a gaming enthusiast, diving deep into the insights shared by Matt Higby about Reaper Actual left me brimming with excitement! With its anticipated launch in Q1 2026, I can hardly wait to immerse myself in this thrilling new game experience soon!
