Rebecca Heineman, a pioneer in both the video game industry and esports, sadly passed away yesterday. She co-founded several companies, including Interplay and Contraband Entertainment, and was the first national esports champion in the United States. Heineman had been battling aggressive lung cancer and was recently hospitalized, where she was given only a few days to live.
As a huge fan, it’s amazing to think about everything Dona Bailey accomplished! She wasn’t just a game developer – she was one of the first women to really break into the industry, and her work has had a lasting impact. Beyond creating incredibly influential games, she also really cared about preserving video game history, and that dedication is a huge part of her incredible legacy.
Generational Run
I remember hearing about this amazing story! Back in 1980, Rebecca Heineman went to a huge Space Invaders competition in Los Angeles – it was all on the Atari 2600. She wasn’t even expecting to do well, but she totally shocked everyone and won the whole thing! And it wasn’t a fluke, because she went on to win another championship in New York too!
That made Heineman the United States’ first national esports champion.
Even as a teenager, Rebecca Heineman was a skilled programmer, building games and software when the industry was still new. In 1983, she helped start Interplay Productions, a famous studio known for titles like Baldur’s Gate, The Bard’s Tale, Wasteland, and especially Fallout.
There were stories that Heineman held a copy of the original source code for the 1997 video game, Fallout.
Throughout her career, she worked at leading gaming companies like Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Microsoft, and Sony. She was also a strong and consistent voice for better LGBTQ+ representation within the gaming industry.
In a post on a GoFundMe page set up to help with medical costs, Heineman explained her story:
I first noticed something was wrong at PAX Prime when I got winded just walking up a flight of stairs. Back in Dallas, a trip to the emergency room revealed I had a significant buildup of fluid around my lungs – 2300ml, as you can see in the photos. They drained another 1600ml a week later. After a series of tests – including scans, X-rays, and blood work – doctors determined I have cancer in both my lungs and liver.
Yesterday, a final post was shared, along with a last image:
My doctors have advised me that there are no more treatments that can help. I’m asking for donations to help my children give my gaming keyboard, Pixelbreaker, a proper memorial. I want to be remembered and join my beloved wife, Jennell Jaquays, with a fitting send-off.
I was really sad to hear about Heineman, though everyone knew him as ‘Burger’ for so many years. It’s heartbreaking to learn he leaves behind five kids. My thoughts are with them during this difficult time.
