Unexpectedly, a new update for the game Red Dead Online surfaced in July 2025, signaling its first significant content expansion in years. This sudden release took many players by surprise, fueling rumors that Rockstar Games might be planning further developments for the offline version of Red Dead Redemption 2 and its online counterpart in the coming months.
For approximately four years following its 2018 debut, Rockstar continued to enhance their multiplayer Western title, Red Dead Online, through periodic updates. However, in July 2022, the company declared that they were wrapping up development on Red Dead Online and would no longer be releasing significant updates. This move may have been prompted by the fact that Grand Theft Auto 6 was reportedly well underway, likely leading Rockstar to shift more of their team towards the new project.
It seems that Rockstar’s interpretation of a significant update might not match that of its player base, as Red Dead Online received a sizable update at the beginning of July 2025 around three years after its launch. Dubbed Strange Tales of the West, this update includes four additional Telegram missions for players to complete, and it starts a fresh event with time-limited challenges and rewards. The best part? It’s completely free!
Red Dead Online’s New Mission Is a Throwback to Undead Nightmare
As a fan, I’m thrilled about the latest missions that feel like they’ve been crafted by Theodore Levin, an author with a knack for the extraordinary and the unknown. One mission that truly catches my eye is “Strange Tales of the Plague,” where players find themselves in a zombie-ridden Armadillo, a quaint settlement nestled within New Austin’s Cholla Springs region. This mission echoes the spirit of Red Dead Redemption’s Undead Nightmare, an expansion that Rockstar still holds as one of their finest pieces of work.
Rockstar Teasing More Red Dead Online Content
There have been a few requests on social media for the game Red Dead Redemption 2 to get an Undead Nightmare-style expansion featuring zombies. However, given that it’s been six years since the game was first released, it seems very unlikely that this will happen. On the other hand, there’s a good chance that Red Dead Online will receive new content, with Rockstar hinting at this through their promotional materials for the July 2025 update, which they’ve referred to as “Strange Tales of the West Volume 1.
It’s uncertain when Volume 2 will be released. The unexpected emphasis on Red Dead Online from Rockstar Games is noteworthy, considering recent speculations about their full-scale work on Grand Theft Auto 6. However, one possible reason for the new content could be the long-rumored next-generation update for Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online, which has been in development for some time now. This update might become available in the latter half of 2025, as suggested by a May report from Gamereactor.
