Red Dead Redemption 1 Has the Perfect Blueprint For a New Protagonist

At present, it seems that the future of the Red Dead Redemption series remains uncertain, as no new installment has been announced since 2018. The critically acclaimed western-themed games from Rockstar have been praised for their intricate narratives, but at this moment, it appears that a third chapter in the Red Dead Redemption saga might be quite some time away.

Time will reveal if Rockstar plans to work on Red Dead Redemption 3 following the release of GTA 6, but until then, there’s plenty of room for speculation about the series. One of the main questions surrounding RDR3 is who will serve as the main character. While it’s possible that a former member of the Van der Linde gang like Sadie or Charles could be the protagonist, a new storyline could also delve into characters outside the outlaw group. If Rockstar wants to introduce some freshness, they might consider expanding upon the Pinkertons, as seen in Red Dead Redemption 1, and exploring their further development.

The Pinkertons Could Prove to Be Red Dead Redemption’s Secret Protagonist Weapon

Leaving Law and Order For a Life of Crime

Over the course of the Red Dead Redemption series, we’ve been following the lives of outlaws. While this path is undeniably engaging, there’s a risk of it becoming monotonous if carried over into RDR3. Instead, perhaps we could delve into the story of an individual who willingly gives up their respectable social status for the outlaw life. This change could open up a rich vein of possibilities and offer something fresh in the series.

In “Red Dead Redemption 2”, the Pinkerton National Detective Agency played a significant role as one of the main adversaries in the narrative. However, in the prequel “Red Dead Redemption 1”, we witness the development of this agency. In “Red Dead Redemption 1”, Edgar Ross, who was once the head of Pinkerton, is assigned to lead the newly established Bureau of Investigation. This shift in organizations signifies how rapidly the Wild West was transforming, as the nation was growing increasingly serious and committed to stamping out lawless behavior.

Established in 1850, the Pinkerton National Detective Agency we know today was initially founded by Allan Pinkerton. While it has undergone a transformation over time and is now recognized as a security and risk management company rather than just a detective agency, its original name still stands. It is now called Pinkerton Consulting & Investigations, Inc.

A potential way to introduce a new protagonist in Red Dead Redemption 3 could be through a character who is initially an agent from Pinkerton or the Bureau of Investigation. Over time, this character might develop disagreements with the organization’s methods, providing a fresh perspective for the player to explore. To maintain a connection with the Van der Linde gang and the franchise, having this new character work under the supervision of Edgar Ross could be an interesting route. Given that Ross betrayed John Marston at the end of Red Dead Redemption 1, it would be fitting for one of his subordinates to question the legitimacy of law enforcement.

Only time will tell if RDR3 is on developer Rockstar’s to-do list after GTA 6 finally launches.

There is Plenty More to Explore Within Red Dead Redemption’s World

The Van der Linde gang has been an engaging group of personalities to watch unfold, but it seems their moment in the limelight may be drawing to a close. There’s speculation that there could be another prequel for Red Dead Redemption (RDR3), set even farther back in time, but this might become too repetitive. Repetition isn’t always negative, since many would jump at the chance to reencounter their beloved characters as younger versions of themselves.

A prequel that follows the early days of Dutch and Hosea is also a strong choice.

Currently, it’s uncertain which direction Rockstar might take for another story in the Red Dead Redemption series. Following the release of GTA 6, we may get some insight into the future of the franchise, but until then, all we can do is hope that Red Dead Redemption 3 will become a reality.
