Since a new Red Dead game seems likely, fans are now focusing on what they’d like to see in it, and there’s been a lot of discussion about potential features and storylines for Rockstar’s next cowboy adventure.
Beyond wanting a setting focused on the peak of the Wild West era rather than its decline, fans are most interested in who will be the main character in the next Red Dead Redemption game. While a completely new protagonist would be a good choice – especially considering how well-loved Arthur Morgan was – the next game could also build on an existing character. Many suggest a story centered on Jack Marston, continuing his journey after the first game and showing him being pursued after seeking revenge for his father’s death. However, this idea isn’t universally loved. Some believe Jack being trapped in a similar cycle of violence is a compelling enough concept without needing to actually play through a predictable storyline.

Another popular choice is Sadie Adler, a memorable and capable bounty hunter from Red Dead Redemption 2. With Grand Theft Auto 6 potentially featuring a female co-lead, Sadie feels like a realistic candidate for a main character. Focusing on her story as a widow seeking revenge would give Rockstar Games a chance to thoughtfully examine the lives of women in a time period after the Wild West. The main challenge with Sadie, though, is that she doesn’t have connections to the original characters; she survived the events of Red Dead Redemption 2 and would likely be pursuing new bounties and meeting entirely new people, separate from the Van Der Linde gang.
A compelling idea for Red Dead Redemption 3 would be to make both Sadie Adler and Jack Marston playable characters. The story could begin with Sadie learning Jack is wanted for killing Edgar Ross while working as a bounty hunter. Driven by her past connection with the Marston family, she could try to help Jack escape, even at great personal risk. Players could switch between controlling Jack and Sadie throughout the game, similar to how GTA 5 and the upcoming GTA 6 handle multiple protagonists, building on the dual-protagonist approach of Red Dead Redemption 2.
Hosea is a Dark Horse Candidate for Red Dead Redemption 3’s Protagonist
The main problem with continuing the story with Sadie and Jack is that fans, based on popular comments on Reddit, seem to want something completely new for the next game. Many, like CT0292, are hoping for a new group of characters and a different time period. ProRoyce, for example, wants Rockstar to revisit the classic Wild West era, where player choices have a real impact. While a new protagonist would be ideal to revamp the Honor System, it might be possible to go back to the Wild West’s peak with an existing character – specifically, Hosea, as his history allows for it.
Now that we’ve shown how Hosea died, the current subtitle might not fit. We should replace the word “Redemption” with something more suitable.
Hosea Matthews would offer a fresh perspective as a protagonist, distinct from Arthur and John, and that’s what would make a game starring him compelling. He’s a charismatic talker, which could introduce more complex dialogue options and skill checks, enriching the gameplay of Red Dead Redemption. A younger Hosea would also let players witness key events they’ve always wondered about, like his first encounters with a more balanced and capable Dutch Van Der Linde. A Hosea-focused game would transport players to the height of the Wild West era, and could even include an epilogue showing Arthur Morgan’s perspective on the events at Blackwater. With so many strong character options available, Rockstar has a wealth of possibilities for future games.
