Both Red Dead Redemption and its expansion, Undead Nightmare, will be available on all current PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo consoles starting in December, alongside their release on mobile devices. Red Dead Redemption is already one of Rockstar’s most popular games – even outselling classics like Grand Theft Auto 3 and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City – and this news will introduce it to a whole new audience.
Since its release in 2010 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Red Dead Redemption has sold over 17.5 million copies. The popular western adventure game has been updated for newer systems, including PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in 2023, and PC in 2024. It recently became very popular on Steam after launching there in late October 2024, with 91% of players giving it a positive review.

Rockstar Games announced on Twitter that Red Dead Redemption is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2 on December 2nd. This version is being developed with help from Double Eleven and Cast Iron Games. The news follows reports that the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) had rated the game for these consoles, hinting at its eventual release on them. The PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions will offer improved graphics, HDR support, and resolutions up to 4K, all running at 60 frames per second. The Switch 2 version will also run at 60 FPS and will include features like DLSS, HDR, and support for the console’s unique mouse controls.
Good news for fans! If you already own Red Dead Redemption on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, or Xbox One (backwards compatible), you’ll get a free upgrade to the newer version on current-gen consoles. Plus, your old save files will still work. And the popular Undead Nightmare expansion will also receive all the same improvements as the main game!
The announcement arrived shortly after Netflix revealed that Red Dead Redemption would be added to its game streaming service. With the game also launching on iPhones and Android phones, players will soon have several ways to enjoy this beloved western shooter. Many fans of Rockstar Games are hoping this means Red Dead Redemption 2 will be available on the service in the future.
