Red Dead Redemption Characters Who Got What They Deserved!

Major spoilers for Red Dead Redemption & Red Dead Redemption 2!

In the wild, lawless West of 1899, it’s tough to find honest men who survive, as there’s an abundance of gunfighters, criminals, and blameless souls who meet their untimely end in Red Dead Redemption 2. Although many characters didn’t deserve their grim ending, some controversial figures undeniably did.

In the game “Red Dead Redemption 2,” several members of the Van der Linde gang were not particularly virtuous, which explains why some of them met an end that was fitting for their actions, albeit unpleasant. Regardless of our personal feelings as fans, we might find ourselves regretting the outcomes of these characters.

6. Colm O’Driscoll

Why He Deserved His Fate: Sadistic murderer with no care for his soldiers

Colm O’Driscoll stands as Dutch Van der Linde’s sworn enemy. He’s a man devoid of honor and brimming with harsh resentment. Despite sharing similar perspectives on the outlaw lifestyle and the negative impact of civilization, Colm remains haunted by Dutch having killed his brother. This grudge persists, even if we consider that Colm was responsible for the death of Dutch’s beloved Anabelle.

Colm is a murderer and the horrible things he has done more than prove how he deserves to be burning in Hell for all his sins. Luckily, Colm was executed in Saint Denis at the gallows when Dutch, Arthur, and Sadie sabotaged his escape plans by taking out the O’Driscoll Boys who were going to free him, thus, Colm was hung by the neck until his death, with fear in his eyes for those last fleeting moments.

5. Leopold Strauss

Leopold Strauss may not have pulled the trigger himself, but he might as well have been wielding a loaded gun for the wrongs he’s committed. Leopold Strauss served as the bookkeeper for the Van der Linde gang, and it was his job to hunt down those in need and offer them loans that would later require repayment.

Indeed, Leopold Strauss, in essence, acts more like a weasel than a man, employing burly individuals such as Arthur Morgan to intimidate and physically abuse those who owe the Van der Linde gang money. The objective is to recover more than what was originally borrowed. Strauss’s actions were indeed cruel and unjust towards innocent people, yet he should have been expelled by Arthur. However, was it justifiable for him to be captured by the Pinkertons and subjected to an interrogation that led to his demise? That’s a question with a complex answer.

4. Micah Bell

Why He Deserved His Fate: A nihilistic murderer and a traitor to his own gang

As a gamer, let me tell you, I’ve come across few as vile as Micah Bell in this wild frontier. He’s a cunning fella, dressed in leather boots, a white-brimmed hat, and always packing a pair of revolvers. Despite joining the Van der Linde gang just recently, it doesn’t take a genius to see through his mask.

He’s a survivor, willing to do whatever it takes to keep his own hide intact. If someone crosses him or doesn’t fit his personal agenda, he won’t hesitate to shoot them in the back. I’ve seen him cold-bloodedly murder innocent townsfolk, like those poor souls in Strawberry, and he’s got a knack for belittling or provoking other members of our gang. That’s Micah Bell for you – a snake in the grass, always lurking and waiting to strike.

Micah’s deceitful words had such an impact on Dutch Van der Linde that he barely recognized his eldest son, Arthur. By manipulating the Van der Lindes, Micah brought about the gang’s downfall. His role as a Pinkerton informant showcased his cowardice, making his death in a 1907 standoff at the hands of John Marston and Dutch Van der Linde justifiable. Even frozen in the snowy peaks of Mount Hagen, it’s fitting that Micah remains there, a reminder of his treachery, despite the world eventually moving on from him.

3. Dutch Van der Linde

Commits Suicide After Being Caught by John Marston

Why He Deserved His Fate: Led plenty of men to their deaths, and killed innocent women

Previously, Dutch Van der Linde was a revered leader, admired by many for his charm and charisma, a magnetism that would make some lay down their lives for him. However, after the demise of his most trusted companion Hosea and facing the inevitability of change, Dutch’s enchanting demeanor and mental stability started to crumble, revealing the corrupted core hidden beneath his well-tailored attire.

After undergoing a change in perspective, Dutch became an even more ruthless assassin than ever before, leading some to believe he was a demon disguised as a human. This man named Dutch has taken numerous lives, including those of innocent women, and by 1911, he had assembled a group of manipulated Native Americans who he mistreated and sent on murderous missions. In the end, Dutch met his demise when faced with John Marston. Rather than being shot or captured by the U.S. Government, Dutch chose to take his own life by jumping to his death.

2. John Marston

Shot to Death by Agent Ross and the U.S. Army

Why He Deserved His Fate: An outlaw who robbed and killed his way through life

In the original “Red Dead Redemption”, John Marston serves as the main character. Though he embarks on a journey towards redemption by tracking down members of his former gang, the deeds of his past cannot be erased. John Marston is a man with a shady past, known for theft and violence, who follows Dutch Van der Linde towards their shared demise. By 1911, society has moved on from outlaws and gunfighters, rendering them obsolete.

John Marston met an unfortunate end, being gunned down by a horde of U.S. Army soldiers and Agent Ross to wrap up outstanding issues. Yet, one could argue that John Marston’s actions warranted his demise. Although some believe he made amends for his past and found peace as a farmer at Beecher’s Hope, the law is inflexible, and John’s death is warranted, albeit tragic.

1. Arthur Morgan

Why He Deserved His Fate: An outlaw who robbed, beat, and killed anyone he was told to

Arthur Morgan is a character full of intricacies, as Mary Linton puts it, “There’s a good man hidden inside you, Arthur, but he’s locked in a struggle with a titan.” Following the failed ferry job at Blackwater and the Van der Linde gang being compelled to travel East, Arthur’s complexity becomes even more evident. He doesn’t shy away from robberies and violence, yet he’s not entirely unsympathetic. In fact, he occasionally extends kindness, going so far as to recall instances when the gang would share some of their ill-gotten gains with the less fortunate.

Arthur’s destiny is set following an altercation where he assaults a debtor named Thomas Downes, who happens to have tuberculosis (TB). Subsequently diagnosed with the same disease, Arthur confronts his impending mortality and reassesses the value of life. In his remaining days, Arthur decides to aid others, hoping that if he fails to survive, those dear to him might find solace in his actions. Arthur’s death is a profound sorrow, but it served as a blessing, revealing his genuine character – a selfless outlaw who put others before himself.

Regardless of whether Arthur Morgan has a low sense of morality, he rightfully meets his end at the hands of Micah Bell, because if not, Arthur would simply be another cold-blooded killer, taken down by someone even more ruthless than himself.
