Red Dead Redemption: Why You Should Start Over in 2026

It’s been almost 16 years since Rockstar Games launched Red Dead Redemption, their sprawling western adventure. The game was a huge hit with critics, earning some of the highest scores of 2010 and winning Game of the Year at the Spike VGAs (now known as The Game Awards). Red Dead Redemption remains a fan favorite, and there’s no better time to revisit this classic game.

I remember when Red Dead Redemption first came out – it was only on the PS3 and Xbox 360! It took a long time, but I was so thrilled when it finally came to the Switch and PS4 with some nice improvements. Then, a year after that, PC gamers like me finally got to experience the whole RDR story, which was amazing. And now? It’s incredible that you can play it on everything – iOS and Android, the PS5, Switch 2, and even the Xbox Series X/S! It’s awesome to see it reach so many players.

The Original Red Dead Redemption Has Gotten a Big Upgrade on Current Consoles

Experiencing Red Dead Redemption on newer consoles like the PS5, the upcoming Switch 2, or Xbox Series X/S is incredible. This updated version boasts enhanced graphics, a smooth 60 frames per second, and 4K resolution, along with other refinements that make it the definitive way to play. If you haven’t revisited the game since the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 era, you’ll be amazed. Even after 16 years, it runs flawlessly and is a pure joy to play.

It’s fantastic to revisit a classic like Red Dead Redemption with these improvements, and I definitely recommend it. But the updated version isn’t the only reason to jump back in – with big things happening in 2026, now is the perfect time to start a new game.

The new versions of Red Dead Redemption come with the Undead Nightmare expansion packed in.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Upgrade Could Be Right Around the Corner

There have been long-standing rumors about Rockstar Games releasing a version of Red Dead Redemption 2 specifically designed for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, allowing the game to run with improved performance and graphics. While Rockstar hasn’t confirmed anything, several trusted sources claim that a next-gen version is in development for both consoles, and surprisingly, also for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.

If the rumors are correct and a major upgrade for Red Dead Redemption 2 is released this year, it will likely come out before GTA 6 in the fall. This is great timing for players to experience Red Dead Redemption 2 on current-generation hardware, enjoy the improvements, and reconnect with John Marston’s story before the highly anticipated sequel arrives.

GTA 6 Isn’t Coming Until the End of the Year

Okay, so the current release date for Grand Theft Auto 6 is November 19, 2026, but honestly, knowing how these things go, I’m fully expecting another delay. We should probably just prepare ourselves for that. Even if it does come out when they say, that’s still almost a year away! To keep myself busy until then, I’m planning on revisiting some of Rockstar’s older games. I’m definitely starting with the original Red Dead Redemption – especially since they’ve released updated versions of it. It’s a perfect way to pass the time!

Honestly, the biggest reason I’m excited to replay Red Dead Redemption is just how amazing the game is. The story is one of the best I’ve ever experienced, and the open world is so immersive – I can easily lose hours just exploring. It’s full of thrilling missions and moments that still take my breath away, and I actually think the pacing is better than RDR2. It’s a true classic, and if you haven’t played it, or haven’t touched it in a while, now’s the perfect time to jump back in and start from the beginning.
