Summary
- Red Hulk was initially supposed to wield guns in the film, but the idea was scrapped for the final version.
- Several action beats, including a visually striking shot of Sam Wilson flipping mid-air, were cut for pacing and clarity.
- Fans were frustrated by Marvel Studios revealing Red Hulk in marketing, showing a different portrayal than the comic-accurate gun-wielding version.
In a potential turn of events, the star character of “Captain America: Brave New World,” known as Red Hulk, might have taken a distinctly different shape and perhaps adhered more closely to his comic book origins, if Marvel Studios had remained steadfast with their original plans… figuratively speaking.
In “Captain America: A Fresh Era,” Harrison Ford’s character, Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, stepped onto the scene, following the late William Hurt. Ross is a former U.S. general who ascends to the presidency before he acquires the mighty Red Hulk powers due to Tim Blake Nelson’s Samuel Sterns administering him gamma-radiated pills. In a series of confrontations, Ross and Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson face off on the White House roof and the streets of Washington D.C. Several months after its release, there remains discontent among fans towards Marvel Studios for revealing Red Hulk in the marketing for “Captain America: A Fresh Era,” a decision perceived as potentially harmful to the film’s commercial success.
Red Hulk Was Initially Supposed To Wield Guns In Captain America: Brave New World
It Is Comic Accurate and Makes Some Sense Given His Military Background
In an interview on JoBlo Celebrity Access on YouTube, filmmaker Julius Onah, known for “Captain America: Brave New World,” talked about various aspects of his movie, including a potential visual style change regarding the Red Hulk character. The original concept would have portrayed the character using guns against Sam Wilson and U.S. security forces instead of relying on brute strength.
In the creative process behind this film, there was a scene initially penned where Red Hulk brandished a firearm, but ultimately, it didn’t align with the movie’s tone as we envisioned it. However, there was an instance, a moment I’ll never forget, when Harrison took on the role of Red Hulk and fired a gun – a scene that left me utterly astonished. It was one of those ‘I can’t believe this is happening right now’ moments! And Harrison delivered it in such a way that made it incredibly enjoyable because he knew he had us comics enthusiasts thoroughly excited.
Instead of just Red Hulk’s redesigned weapon making the cut, Onah disclosed that numerous intense scenes were edited out during post-production for better flow and narrative understanding. A notable absence was an eye-catching high-speed sequence featuring Sam Wilson performing an aerial flip onto his shield.
As a movie enthusiast, let me share my thoughts on this film. Just like any creative work, there’s always a need to trim down some cherished elements, or ‘darlings’, to maintain a balanced pace, narrative clarity, and overall storytelling.
In this particular action-packed flick, there were a couple of fight sequences that I found particularly gripping. One such instance was during the hallway brawl where our protagonist, Sam, performed an impressive high-speed flip onto a shield, effectively knocking out an adversary. This scene, in a way, served as a foreshadowing of another spectacular flip later in the movie, where he slices a car in mid-air using the same acrobatic move.
I’m a big fan of visual callbacks and how they can weave together different moments within a film to create a more cohesive experience. These instances where elements communicate with each other across the movie are what make the viewing journey truly special.
Brave New World is flawed in every aspect.
It’s not entirely clear why Marvel decided to hold off on using this particular design for Red Hulk, but there’s a chance that future appearances might include it, if Kevin Feige has big plans for his comeback. At the end, Ross is imprisoned in human form at the Raft, a floating penitentiary in the Atlantic. It was surprising to see him missing from Thunderbolts, especially since the team bears his namesake. Perhaps he’ll escape from the Raft and team up with Sam Wilson, or even better for him, be cured.
*Note: The correct spelling of the comic book series is “Thunderbolts” without the asterisks.
