Rematch Looks Like A Certified Rocket League Killer After Recent Beta

Summary

  • Rematch, an arcade-style 5v5 soccer game by SloClap, gained major engagement with nearly 900k players in the recent closed beta.
  • The game is not free-to-play, priced at $29.99, and aims to offer a unique experience locked into one character per player.
  • Rematch’s appeal is likened to Rocket League, providing accessible, fast-paced gameplay likely to attract a wide audience.

After the triumph of Sifu, the creators at SloClap opted for a completely new strategy when developing their subsequent games. This shift is evident in Rematch, a soccer game with an arcade flavor, where teams of five compete in a thrilling third-person view.

If you found the studio’s new direction surprising and even bewildering, you’re not alone in that sentiment. Upon first seeing Rematch, I couldn’t help but wonder if the Sloclap team had taken a turn for the unconventional. However, based on the recent beta testing, it appears that when it is officially launched, this game could very well become a popular multiplayer sensation.

Rematch Beta Stats Show Off Impressive Engagement

Over the weekend, I was part of a closed beta with almost 900,000 other gamers! That’s right, even though it wasn’t accessible to all, we managed to gather an impressive number of participants for this test run.

Some of the stats straight from Sloclap’s press release:

  • 880,992 active players participated in the open beta, which is exactly 10.252 football fields if you put all 880,992 people shoulder to shoulder on a football pitch. Facts don’t lie, man. (Pitch size 100x50m).
  • The amount of goals retired mega-legend Megan Rapinoe has in her U.S. Soccer stats is 63, which is also the same percentage figure of players in the open beta who played more than 10 matches (63%). Legendary.
  • 2,822,143 matches were played in the Rematch open beta. If each of those matches was the full time in a regulation football match, that would be 253,992,870 minutes of regulation soccer. That’s 483.2 years! I’m ready coach, put me in.
  • The average match duration of Rematch in the open beta was 7 minutes and 42 seconds. If you had a football pitch of 100x50m, an elite sprinter could do 14 laps around a pitch in that time. Do not put me in, coach, I am NOT ready.
  • By contrast, the same sprinter could only make it around 6.3 times in 3 minutes and 29 seconds, which is the average number of overtime duration during the Rematch open beta.
  • Rematch open beta sported THREE MILLION hours of playtime which is 350 years. If you started playing a football match that lasted that long, you’d have started in 1675. Fun fact: they totally had football in 1675 in England.

It’s important to mention that Rematch isn’t a free game; instead, it will set you back $29.99 on both consoles and PC. If you find it surprising that this multiplayer game didn’t opt for the free-to-play model, one of its creators provided an explanation as to why they believe not every online game needs to hop on the free-to-play trend.

Some may write off Rematch as merely a sports game, but it appears to offer something beyond the ordinary. Comparable to the sensation generated by Rocket League in its early days, Rematch might just be another hidden gem waiting to explode on the scene.

Don’t underestimate the allure of arcade-style sports games such as NBA Jam, which offers a welcoming platform for individuals to engage in gaming without feeling intimidated. Even if you’re not particularly fond of soccer, the charm of Rematch is evident. While it doesn’t include real players or licensed teams, and unlike traditional sports simulations where one player governs an entire team, Rematch restricts players to a single character throughout the match, providing a unique twist to the usual gameplay.

It’s likely that an open beta for this game will become accessible on consoles and PC prior to its release on June 19th, although Sloclap hasn’t made any official announcements about it yet.
