Tero Virtala, CEO of Remedy Entertainment, is leaving his position. This announcement follows news that sales for the company’s latest game, the multiplayer title FBC: Firebreak, are falling short of expectations.
Tero Virtala has been a part of the Remedy Entertainment team since 2016, witnessing a significant period of growth for the studio. Remedy has become known as one of the most original game developers in the industry, crafting immersive stories like those in the Alan Wake series and Control. They’ve begun connecting their games into a larger, shared universe, and FBC: Firebreak is another piece of that expanding story. While FBC: Firebreak is set within the world of Control and marked Remedy’s first attempt at a multiplayer game, it continues to have a small player base even after a recent substantial update.
Remedy CEO Tero Virtala Parts Ways With the Company
- Virtala’s exit is effective immediately.
- Remedy co-founder Markus Maki will step in as interim CEO.
Remedy Entertainment announced Tero Virtala’s departure in a memo posted on their website. The company hasn’t shared the reason for his leaving, though some speculate it may be connected to the disappointing launch of FBC: Firebreak. In the announcement, Remedy’s Markus Maki thanked Virtala for his significant contributions to the company since 2016, wishing him well in his future endeavors. He specifically noted their positive working relationship.
The Future of the Remedy Extended Universe is a Mystery
Now that Remedy Entertainment has new leadership, its future plans are uncertain. The sequel to Control is still being made, and Alan Wake 2 ended in a way that easily allows for another game. Remedy is known for its story-driven games, so it will be interesting to see if they continue focusing on narratives or try something different, like more multiplayer games similar to FBC: Firebreak.
It’s sad to see Tero Virtala leave Remedy after almost ten years, but we’re also curious to see who they appoint as the new CEO to guide the company forward. While the official announcement date wasn’t shared, we expect Remedy to reveal their next CEO in the coming weeks.
