Remedy Gives Positive Update on Max Payne Remakes and Control 2

Highlights

  • Remedy Entertainment announced that the Max Payne 1&2 remake and Control 2 have advanced to their next development stages.
  • The remake will reimagine the first two Max Payne games into one using Remedy’s Northlight Engine, playable on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
  • Remedy’s revenue rose in Q2 2024, with high hopes for increased income throughout the rest of the year, likely thanks to Alan Wake 2.

As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and excitement at the news that Remedy Entertainment is taking the next steps in developing both the remake of Max Payne 1&2 and Control 2. These games have left indelible marks on the gaming world, and it’s thrilling to see them being given new life.

According to Remedy Entertainment, the re-creations of the initial Max Payne games and a follow-up for Control have moved forward in development stages. Among the highly acclaimed intellectual properties produced by the Finnish studio, Max Payne and Control rank among the most favored.

2022 saw a thrilling announcement from Remedy, revealing their plans to revisit two iconic action games from the early 2000s – Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne – in collaboration with series publisher Rockstar Games. These cinematic, third-person shooter games will be completely revamped as a unified title, utilizing Remedy’s Northlight Engine for gamers on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. On the other hand, Control 2, the much-anticipated sequel to the 2019 action-adventure game, was initially confirmed in 2021. Recently, the developer has provided some insights into the progress of these exciting projects, which they discussed in an update back in April. As a gamer, I can hardly wait to dive back into these captivating worlds!

According to their recent financial update, Remedy announced that the remake of Max Payne 1 and 2 officially entered full production during the second quarter. Meanwhile, Control 2 advanced to the stage where it’s ready for production. In terms of the Max Payne remake, they have been developing an initial version of the game that can be played from start to finish, emphasizing unique gameplay elements. At this point, the studio has a playable build for Control 2 showcasing key features as they aim to ramp up production even more. Furthermore, the early build of Control 2 was subjected to a significant internal playtest to collect feedback.

Control Developer Sees an Uptick in Revenue

In addition to providing updates on its primary intellectual properties, Remedy revealed a Q2 2024 revenue of approximately EUR 10.3 million (or USD 11.25 million), marking a 16.2% rise compared to the same quarter in the preceding year. The Finnish developer anticipates an uptick in revenue for the remainder of the year, as well as an enhancement in its operating income. This projected growth seems tied to the physical release of Alan Wake 2, scheduled for October.

Back in May, Remedy decided to scrap Project Kestrel – a brand-new game idea – and instead focus on expanding their existing franchises. This dedication to our established IPs makes me as a gamer feel confident that the Alan Wake studio will pour all their efforts into the upcoming Max Payne 1 & 2 remake and Control 2.
