Approximately a year following the launch of the critically acclaimed “Alan Wake 2”, Remedy Entertainment unveiled that they were developing a new game titled “FBC: Firebreak“. This upcoming title, in production for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, represents uncharted territory for the Finnish studio. Not only is “FBC: Firebreak” Remedy’s first-ever First Person Shooter (excluding the single-player mode of “CrossfireX” ), it’s also their debut multiplayer game and self-published title. Transitioning from single-player to multiplayer can be challenging for developers, but Remedy Entertainment appears to have maintained many elements that make their games exceptional in “FBC: Firebreak“.
In simpler terms, “Firebreak (FBC)” is a cooperative first-person shooter game for three players that takes place in the same universe as “Alan Wake” and “Control.” Players will join forces with friends to explore the Oldest House where they’ll encounter strange and otherworldly adversaries, including a swarm of sticky notes! These foes are infected by the Hiss, the malevolent paranormal force that was the main antagonist in “Control.” As for the release date, while it hasn’t been pinned down precisely, “Firebreak (FBC)” is expected to arrive sometime during summer 2025. Interestingly or perhaps intentionally, Remedy seems to have chosen an ideal release timeframe for the game.
FBC: Firebreak is Being Released at an Ideal Time
Although 2025 is Packed with Game Releases, The Summer Months Seem to Be Fairly Empty
2025 is shaping up to be an absolute dream year for gamers like me, with a plethora of highly anticipated titles gracing our screens. Games such as Grand Theft Auto 6, Ghost of Yotei, Borderlands 4, Crimson Desert, and Mafia: The Old Country are just a few of the major releases set to drop. Not only that, but the long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to hit the market soon, accompanied by a host of fresh games. With such an impressive lineup, it’s easy to imagine 2025 being the most monumental year in the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S generation so far. Despite the fear that a game like FBC: Firebreak might get lost amidst these giants, the truth could be quite different.
As I write this piece, the release schedule for Remedy Entertainment’s FBC: Firebreak appears relatively uncrowded. At present, only a few notable AAA games are aiming for a summer 2025 launch (from June to August). These include Death Stranding 2: On the Beach from Kojima Productions, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 Remake by Activision, and Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater from Konami. Fortunately, these games belong to different genres than FBC: Firebreak, minimizing direct competition between them.
Even if the Switch 2 Launches in Summer 2025, It May Not Impact FBC: Firebreak That Much
One potential factor that could throw a wrench into Remedy Entertainment’s release plans for FBC: Firebreak, might be the anticipated launch of the Nintendo Switch 2. On April 2nd, Nintendo is set to unveil their upcoming console, and if everything goes as planned, it could hit the market by summer 2025. This could mean the arrival of highly-anticipated games like Mario Kart 9 or a new mainline 3D Mario title. With the Switch 2’s launch titles expected to dominate the gaming world for quite some time, it might overshadow FBC: Firebreak, given that it does not appear to be coming out on the Nintendo Switch 2 and is in a genre distinct from most Nintendo games. However, since this game doesn’t seem to be directly competing with Nintendo’s offerings, it may not pose too great a challenge.
FBC: Firebreak is Going to be Accessible to a Very Large Audience at Launch
Apart from its release through windows, it’s important to mention that the game “FBC: Firebreak” is debuting on PlayStation Plus Extra/Premium and Xbox Game Pass on the same day. This means a large number of gamers can access it at no additional cost right away, potentially increasing the game’s visibility on current-generation consoles and maintaining a substantial player base in the near future. As long as “FBC: Firebreak” avoids initial issues and doesn’t get delayed, its simultaneous launch on these subscription services should help Remedy Entertainment avoid being overshadowed by other upcoming AAA titles.
