The remake of Capcom’s Resident Evil 4 is receiving negative reviews on Steam, nearly three years after it first came out. Players are upset about a recent update that changed the game’s DRM (digital rights management), causing noticeable performance issues.
The 2023 remake of Resident Evil 4 was a huge hit with critics, earning an average score of 92 on OpenCritic and a 98% recommendation rate. Reviewers loved that the remake stayed true to the original game while also making key improvements, especially to the often-frustrating sections where you had to protect Ashley. Considering Resident Evil 4 is already considered one of the greatest survival horror games ever made, it’s impressive that Capcom managed to make it even better. However, a recent update has changed how some PC players feel about the game.

So, the Resident Evil 4 remake on PC got an update, and honestly, it’s kinda messed things up. They swapped out Denuvo DRM for something called Enigma, and a lot of us are seeing a serious hit to our FPS – like, a noticeable drop in performance even with the same settings. I saw a video from ItalicMaze showing the FPS difference, and it’s pretty clear. It’s not just me either, the Steam reviews are flooded with people complaining about the same thing. One player put it perfectly – the game used to be a shining example of how well a game could be optimized, but now it feels crippled by this new DRM. It’s frustrating because it was running great before, and now it feels like we’re being punished for actually buying the game.

As of today, the game is still rated “Very Positive” overall, despite recent reviews being slightly lower. However, if the negative feedback keeps up, that rating could change. It would be disappointing to see such a highly-regarded Resident Evil game lose its positive reception after doing so well for so long. Capcom hasn’t yet addressed the performance issues caused by the new Enigma DRM, or if they’re considering going back to the previous Denuvo system.
Digital Rights Management, or DRM, is often a difficult issue for publishers. Even a well-known system like Denuvo is frequently disliked by gamers and can cause controversy when added to a game. The success of GOG, a PC game store that doesn’t use DRM, shows that many gamers actively prefer to avoid it.
There’s a lot to be excited about for fans of Resident Evil! This month, Capcom is releasing Resident Evil Requiem, the ninth main game, featuring Leon Kennedy and a new character, Grace Ashcroft, with a return to the iconic Raccoon City. Plus, a recent leak suggests a remake of Resident Evil 5 is coming soon. Considering how well the previous remakes have been received, it makes perfect sense for Capcom to revisit the fifth game in the series.
