The upcoming “Resident Evil” game is yet to arrive, despite numerous rumors suggesting its existence. It’s rumored that “Resident Evil 9” will be an open-world game, utilizing the same technology as “Dragon’s Dogma 2” and “Monster Hunter Wilds.” However, Capcom appears content to give both games ample time to develop. The “Resident Evil” series has had significant gaps between its mainline games in the past, but with no title planned after the 2024 remake of “Resident Evil 4” and “Onimusha: Way of the Sword” set for release in 2026, it seems that “Resident Evil 9” is shaping up to be a particularly lengthy wait.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t contain my excitement about the upcoming Resident Evil game that hasn’t been officially announced yet. From what’s been leaking around, it seems like our main characters will be a younger Jill Valentine and an appropriately aged Leon S. Kennedy, with Chris Redfield and Barry Burton joining as veterans.
I must admit, the idea of an open-world Resident Evil feels quite different from the series we’ve grown to love, but if it learns from the masterful open world gameplay of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, especially in terms of its most contentious mechanic, then I’m all for it. After all, even a drastic departure can lead to success if handled with finesse.
Breath of the Wild’s Weapon Durability Was A Bold, But Risky Endeavor
Why Other Games Are Hesitant To Copy Breath of the Wild’s Durability
People who have played both ‘The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’ and ‘The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’ are aware that these games introduced significant changes to the series’ fundamental structure, with weapon durability being the most contentious issue. Even after a whole console generation and numerous sales in the tens of millions, some players still dislike the limited weapon durability present in ‘Breath of the Wild’. They argue that the Fuse power in ‘Tears of the Kingdom’ doesn’t fully address this concern. Regardless of individual preferences, it is an essential aspect of ‘Breath of the Wild’s identity.
The main purpose behind this feature is its ability to bring an element of diversity to the gameplay experience, despite potential arguments that it may appear artificial. The frequent weapon breakdowns, functioning as powerful attacks when thrown, necessitate players to constantly seek out new weapons, defensive equipment like shields, and bows to replace their worn-out items. In the world of Breath of the Wild, stronger gear frequently boasts increased durability; however, no tool can last indefinitely. Managing your limited storage space is another aspect of this system, encouraging players to hunt for Koroks, as finding them often rewards new equipment.
Resident Evil 9 Could Pair Its Open World With Weapon Durability
Despite the system’s clear potential, there’s no denying that it needs refinement, and each game must find its unique approach to handling such a dynamic feature. Resident Evil 9, for instance, could garner substantial benefits by skillfully integrating weapon degradation alongside its open-world setting. This is particularly intriguing given that the Resident Evil series is renowned for its limited inventory capacity, and its extensive arsenal of firearms, grenades, and blades could be dispersed across an expansive landscape. Durability would then force players to tackle various or similar challenges in vastly different manners due to the scarcity of resources.
Durability in Resident Evil Must Be Balanced Carefully
As a fan, I’m excited about the prospect of Resident Evil 9 delving deeper into the weapon durability system, building upon the experiments from Resident Evil 4’s remake. While knives can wear out over time, extending this concept to guns introduces new challenges. For instance, special, one-time use items like grenade launchers and rocket launchers could work as intended, but regular firearms would require different types of ammunition. Managing inventory in Resident Evil 9 will be a tricky balancing act between limited weapon slots and an attaché case. Weapon durability is a risky proposition, but if executed skillfully, Resident Evil 9 could turn one of The Legend of Zelda’s less favored mechanics into a strength.
