Resident Evil 9 Would Be Wise to Avoid Another Lady Dimitrescu Controversy

Highlights

  • Resident Evil 9 must carefully handle villain marketing to avoid controversy like with Lady Dimitrescu in Village.
  • Capcom needs to showcase all villains equally in trailers to set proper expectations for Resident Evil 9’s story.
  • The franchise’s long history of excellent villains puts pressure on Resident Evil 9 to deliver something new.

As a long-time fan of the Resident Evil series, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation as we approach the release of Resident Evil 9. The franchise has given us some truly iconic villains over the years, from the silent terror of Mr. X to the charmingly evil Albert Wesker. Yet, with every new entry comes the pressure to deliver something fresh and memorable.

Throughout the decades, the Resident Evil series has introduced an impressive roster of formidable antagonists. From the stealthy terror of Mr. X and Nemesis to the charismatic malevolence of Albert Wesker, these villains have taken on various forms. Regardless of their nature, they’ve consistently propelled the Resident Evil narrative and provided some of the most thrilling moments in the franchise.

As the ninth major installment and the 31st game in the Resident Evil series, Resident Evil 9 carries a significant burden to deliver an experience unlike any other for fans. Given this, much of that expectation will land on the game’s antagonist. Consequently, Capcom must be cautious in their promotional efforts for the game to avoid repeating the missteps made with Resident Evil Village’s marketing.

Resident Evil 9 Can’t Repeat Village’s Marketing Mistakes

Resident Evil Village’s Marketing Caused a Lady Dimitrescu Controversy

In June 2020, Capcom unveiled the announcement trailer for Resident Evil Village, which was arguably the most revealing trailer they produced for the game. This first trailer offered players a lengthy sneak peek into Chris Redfield’s startling introduction scene in the game, and also provided fleeting glimpses of all major antagonists. Notably, Alcina Dimitrescu was introduced in this initial reveal, quickly becoming the center of attention.

A gigantic 9-foot-tall vampire with some absurd body proportions, Lady Alcina Dimitrescu became a viral hit pretty much right away. Though it took a little while for Capcom to catch on, it eventually started to lean into this viral sensation more for Resident Evil Village‘s marketing. The January 2021 Resident Evil Village trailer is the perfect example of this, focusing most of its almost 3-minute runtime on Lady Dimitrescu, her vampiric daughters, and their ancient castle abode.

Despite Heisenberg having notable scenes in the April 2021 trailer for Resident Evil Village, a significant portion of the video’s duration is dedicated to Lady Dimitrescu. The extensive pre-release marketing by Capcom, focusing on Lady Dimitrescu, led fans to anticipate her as a crucial character in Resident Evil Village’s narrative. However, in the game, Lady Dimitrescu is killed early on, with Castle Dimitrescu being the initial area players traverse, and Lady D. being the first boss defeated. Although her screen time was impactful, many fans felt that she was eliminated too swiftly, and Capcom’s marketing may have set unrealistic expectations for her role in the story.

Resident Evil 9 Needs to Handle Its Villain Marketing Carefully

As an ardent fan, I can’t help but express my thoughts on the upcoming Resident Evil 9. When Capcom unveils this highly anticipated game and reveals its antagonist(s), they should remember the impact of Lady Dimitrescu. To steer clear of any potential backlash, Resident Evil 9 has two viable options.
