If you’re into survival horror, you definitely know the name Shinji Mikami. He’s the guy who led the team at Capcom that made the original Resident Evil back in ’96, and then followed it up with Dino Crisis a few years later. Even though he hasn’t worked on those games for a long time, he’s still been making horror games – I was really impressed with The Evil Within in 2014. He built up Tango Gameworks, which gave us Ghostwire: Tokyo and Hi-Fi Rush, but he left in 2023. We hadn’t heard much from him since, until March 2026 when he announced he’d started a new studio called Unbound Games. They just dropped a teaser for their first project, and it looks like they’re teaming up with Shift Up, the developers of Stellar Blade, which is seriously exciting!
Not much is known about Shinji Mikami’s new game studio, Unbound Games, but job postings suggest they’re working on a brand new, high-budget game. Fans are eager for another scary survival horror title from Mikami, though he’s expressed interest in exploring different game types. This could be happening with his next project, as reports indicate Unbound Games may be collaborating with Shift Up, the developers of the popular action game Stellar Blade, on this new title.
Shinji Mikami Teases Collaboration with Stellar Blade Studio
On March 31st, both Shift Up and Unbound Games released mysterious hints on social media. Shift Up’s teaser showed a person answering a phone, followed by a message saying “Announcement Coming Soon,” and included the date April 1, 2026, suggesting a reveal is imminent. Less than two hours later, Unbound Games posted a video featuring Shinji Mikami and an unidentified person, with Mikami expressing a desire to “make games together to change the world.” This video also ended with the “Announcement Coming Soon” message, using the same font as Shift Up’s post. A user on X (formerly Twitter), Genki_JPN, pointed out the matching fonts and speculated that the hidden figure in both teasers might be Kim Hyung-tae, the director of Stellar Blade.
As a huge fan, I’m getting seriously excited! The little bit of dialogue we heard in the Unbound teaser really suggests that Shinji Mikami and Kim Hyung-tae might be joining forces for something brand new. It could be something smaller, like adding Stellar Blade content to an update, but it sounds like they’re planning a big project together – a full game! We don’t know for sure if they’re working on Unbound‘s new AAA title, or something completely different, but Shift Up has a countdown on YouTube, and we’ll find out for sure on April 1st. I can’t wait!
The next update on the project from Unbound Games and Shift Up is scheduled for 10pm Eastern Time / 7pm Pacific Time on March 31st, or 11am Japan Standard Time on April 1st. It’s worth noting that April 1st is April Fools’ Day, and companies have sometimes used the day to play tricks on fans. Still, the March 31st timing in many regions offers hope for a genuine reveal from Shinji Mikami’s team. Players eager to learn more can stay tuned to find out what Unbound Games and Shift Up, led by Kim Hyung-tae, are working on.
