Resident Evil Movie Reboot In Development by “Barbarian” Director

Summary

  • New Resident Evil film reboot in development, stays faithful to game roots, aiming for horror essence.
  • Barbarian director Zach Cregger is to direct this new take on franchise.
  • Constantin Film producing reboot, four studios in bidding war for rights, potential to exceed previous adaptations.

Although the Resident Evil film series by Paul W.S. Anderson generated substantial revenue for Capcom, it deviated significantly from the original storyline. However, the 2021 release, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, was a step in the right direction, staying truer to the video game’s origins. Yet, even this film didn’t entirely quell the desire for a Resident Evil movie that truly captures the spirit of the franchise on the big screen.

It appears that a fresh start for the Resident Evil series might be on its way, seeing as a new movie is rumored to be under production. This upcoming film will serve as a reboot, meaning it won’t share continuity with the movies starring Milla Jovovich.

Resident Evil From Acclaimed Director Starts A Bidding War

According to The Hollywood Reporter, an entertainment publication, there are rumors that Zach Cregger, the director of Barbarian, is working on a new Resident Evil movie franchise reboot. This reboot reportedly aims to stick closely to the video game series it’s based on, as hinted at in leaks earlier this month.

Four production companies are competing for the film rights: Netflix, Warner Bros., Constantin Film, and PlayStation Productions. Constantin Film has possessed the screen rights to this title since the late ’90s. Additionally, PlayStation Productions, which is increasing its presence in game-to-movie adaptations, will also contribute to the reboot production.

In 2022, the film Barbarian, both written and directed by actor and comedian Cregger, became a cult favorite. It’s been reported that his approach to the Resident Evil movie is characterized as a refreshing revamp, returning the title to its horror origins and promising a more authentic adaptation of the original video games.

In all, there were six films in the Resident Evil series directed by Paul W. S. Anderson. Despite receiving negative reviews from critics, these movies collectively grossed over $1 billion at the box office. Given that, it’s reasonable to assume that whatever Cregger is working on will likely surpass what we’ve seen so far, don’t you think?

According to the movie franchises they stem from, Capcom has formally revealed that Resident Evil 9 is being created, and we’re keeping our fingers crossed for more details to surface this year.
