Resident Evil Reboot Director Reveals Which Parts of the Franchise He Avoids ‘That’s Just Not My Thing’

Following positive initial reviews of his “Weapons” film, director Zack Cregger’s upcoming reboot of the “Resident Evil” series is poised to offer something distinctly new. The filmmaker has shared which aspects of the popular zombie saga he deliberately steered clear of during production. Previously, the “Resident Evil” universe has been brought to life through live-action in Paul W.S. Anderson’s movie series that spanned from 2002 to 2016 and featured Milla Jovovich as a central character.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but reminisce about “Resident Evil” or “Biohazard,” as it’s affectionately known in Japan. This survival horror masterpiece from Capcom shook the horror genre all the way back in 1996, and since then, it has grown into a vast universe encompassing television series, comics, novels, and audiobooks.

The latest addition to this expansive world is the multiplayer strategy game, “Resident Evil Survival Unit,” set to feature some of our beloved franchise characters. And here’s something that has us all buzzing – “Resident Evil Requiem” was announced during Summer Game Fest and is scheduled for release next year, coinciding with Cregger’s reboot movie.

Resident Evil Reboot Director Didn’t Watch Paul W.S. Anderson’s Movies

In a Deadline article published on MovieWeb, director Cregger admitted he hadn’t watched any of Anderson’s previous films or the recent “Welcome to Raccoon City”. He stated that while he isn’t into movies, he is fond of video games, particularly the Resident Evil series. Cregger expressed confidence in the upcoming movie, saying it would be a hit. However, he confessed he had played all the games, including Resident Evil 4 which he played numerous times. He further mentioned his aim was to create a story that mirrors the gaming experience, something fans will undoubtedly admire. Leaked plot details for the Resident Evil reboot hinted that the film’s setting within the game series would maintain an initially intact Raccoon City.

I don’t usually watch movies, they’re not really my cup of tea. However, when it comes to games, I’m all in! They’re like my favorite playground, if you will. I have a feeling the upcoming movie will be quite exciting.

Towards the beginning of this year, it was speculated that the Resident Evil reboot had secured its main actor from the series Euphoria. This individual is expected to portray a character named Bryan, who is a courier, and accidentally becomes embroiled in Umbrella’s mischief as he completes an after-hours delivery. Upon encountering a strange figure on the road, chaos ensues when an outbreak occurs, leading to the emergence of “tentacle-based mutations” and genetically engineered monstrosities.

Although predominantly influenced by Capcom’s Resident Evil video game series during production, Cregger explained how his reboot of Resident Evil will deviate from the games. In an effort to create a distinct yet faithful experience, the director acknowledged that he didn’t strictly adhere to the established lore, focusing instead on crafting a captivating narrative. Cregger asserted that his interpretation of the iconic tale is unlike any movie previously made, but some fans are cautious about departures from the original games.

The Resident Evil reboot is expected to be released on September 18, 2026.
