Resident Evil Requiem Almost Put Grace Through One of Ethan’s Worst Moments

Minor spoilers for Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village follow.

A recent conversation with the creators of Resident Evil Requiem shared that the game’s new main character, Grace, nearly went through a very difficult experience similar to one Ethan Winters faced in Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. This information came out while the developers were discussing how they’re designing Resident Evil Requiem to be distinct from the more action-packed gameplay of Resident Evil Village.

Over its 30-year history, the Resident Evil series has experienced both successes and setbacks as a survival horror franchise. Resident Evil 4 was the first title to deviate from the traditional style, and Resident Evil 5 and 6 continued this trend by becoming much more focused on action. The reaction to the action in Resident Evil 6 was strongly negative, leading the series to shift back towards intense survival horror, beginning with Resident Evil 7.

Grace Nearly Lost a Piece of Herself in Resident Evil Requiem

In an interview with IGN, Resident Evil Requiem director Koshi Nakanishi and producer Masato Kumazama discussed the game and its creative choices. They revealed that the development team once considered a disturbing injury for Grace – the loss of a leg, mirroring Ethan’s hand injury in Resident Evil 7. Koshi Nakanishi explained that the team was brainstorming ways to heighten the horror, and thought the idea of Grace suffering a severe leg wound or complete leg loss would be “so scary.” Ultimately, they decided against pursuing the idea before it reached full development.

Those who enjoyed Resident Evil 7 might recall that Ethan loses and then has his hand reattached using a staple gun by the Baker family. He can also lose a leg during the game, which he manages to fix himself by reattaching it and applying first aid. However, given that Ethan experienced a similar injury in Resident Evil Village, players might not have found this second instance as frightening or impactful as they would have otherwise.

Although this frightening idea wasn’t included in the final game, Resident Evil Requiem appears to have plenty of scares. Players can customize their experience somewhat thanks to the game’s third-person and first-person perspectives. This allows players to choose between a more distant, over-the-shoulder view, or to experience the game directly through Grace’s eyes with a first-person perspective. Many details about the game, including whether Leon will appear, are still unknown, but initial reactions suggest it will be quite scary, at the very least.
