Resident Evil Requiem: How Often Do You Get to Be Leon?

The upcoming game, Resident Evil Requiem, will allow players to control Leon S. Kennedy for roughly half of the gameplay. The game’s director recently shared this information, and it’s likely to please many fans who have been eagerly waiting to play as Leon again.

For a long time, fans have wondered if Leon would be in the next Resident Evil game. The answer became clear at The Game Awards 2025 with the new trailer for Resident Evil Requiem. The trailer confirmed Leon’s return, though he wasn’t shown until the very end – saving the day with some impressive zombie headshots. Capcom likely used this delayed reveal to create excitement at the biggest gaming event of the year, and it worked – fans online were thrilled to see him included in the game.

Geoff Keighley, host of The Game Awards, confirmed Leon will be a playable character in Resident Evil Requiem. However, it wasn’t clear how much of the game players would actually control him. Thankfully, director Akifumi Nakanishi recently explained in an interview that players will control Leon for roughly half of the game, with the other half focused on the other main character, Grace Ashcroft. This is a change from initial impressions following the game’s announcement in July 2024, where Grace was presented as the primary, and potentially sole, protagonist. Capcom had previously dismissed leaks mentioning Leon as false, but those statements referred to specific altered images online and didn’t definitively rule out his inclusion in the game.

Nakanishi clarified that while Grace excels during the game’s scary, survival-horror moments, Leon is better at handling the action-packed parts of Resident Evil, and that’s why he’ll be taking the lead this time. Leon has evolved throughout the series, and the director believes his experience and confident personality make him less suited for pure horror. So, players shouldn’t expect him to be scared or for the most terrifying moments to happen when they’re playing as him.

The game will explore the story through Grace Ashcroft, and the director hopes players will enjoy the contrast between her and Leon Kennedy as the two main characters. Although there’s one overall story, Leon is a seasoned veteran who’s faced the worst of Resident Evil, while Grace is described as the most easily frightened character in the series’ history. Both characters will offer unique and intense experiences, with the shift between them feeling like a sudden change in temperature – going from a hot sauna to a cold bath.

Many long-running game franchises focus on a single main character, but the Resident Evil series is known for letting players control a variety of heroes. Over nearly 30 years, more than 20 different characters have been playable, starting with Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield in the original 1996 game and continuing with characters like Ethan Winters in Resident Evil 7 and Village. Leon Kennedy is one of the most popular, recently appearing in the 2023 remake of Resident Evil 4 alongside Ashley Graham.
