Resident Evil Requiem is ‘Almost Like Having Two Games’, Says Director

The director of the new Resident Evil game, revealed at The Game Awards 2025, says the experience will feel like playing two distinct games in one.

Capcom has been secretive about Resident Evil Requiem since its announcement, especially regarding the playable character of Leon Kennedy. While leaks hinted at his inclusion, official confirmation was needed. Now that Leon’s been confirmed, the game’s director has explained how his gameplay differs from the other character’s.

Resident Evil Requiem’s Leon and Grace Sections are ‘Almost Equally Split’, But Heavily Differ From Each Other

In a recent interview with Automaton, Resident Evil Requiem director Akifumi Nakanishi discussed the gameplay for Leon and Grace, and shared other details about the game. Nakanishi explained that players will control Leon and Grace for roughly the same amount of time, similar to the structure of the Revelations games. He also noted that Leon isn’t a natural fit for horror gameplay, so his sections will be fast-paced and action-packed. Grace, on the other hand, will feature the more frightening parts of the game, and the developers are really trying to make their experiences feel distinct from each other.

Nakanishi describes the game as creating a unique contrast, feeling like switching between two very different experiences. He likened it to the shock of going from a hot sauna to a cold bath, jokingly adding that players will feel safe during Leon’s sections, but experience fear again when Grace returns. This shift between safety and fear is intentional, a deliberately crafted horror element, according to the director.

Rumors suggest that remakes of Resident Evil Code Veronica and Resident Evil Zero are planned for release in 2027 and 2028, respectively. There’s also talk that the upcoming game, Resident Evil Requiem, might feature a second playable character. What do you think about Requiem seemingly being two games in one?
