The highly anticipated Resident Evil Requiem, the ninth major game in Capcom’s famous series, is launching in just one month! To build excitement, the developers held a special Resident Evil Showcase this Thursday, January 15th.
Although the event was short, lasting around 13 minutes, it revealed exciting details about the game that have made the wait for its release feel much longer.
Two Heroes, Two Completely Different Games

The showcase highlighted the major differences between the campaigns of Leon S. Kennedy and Grace Ashcroft. Although both storylines are roughly the same length, today’s presentation made it clear they will feel very different. Director Koshi Nakanishi explained, “Playing as Grace and Leon will feel like playing two completely different games.”
To reflect Leon’s experience as a seasoned veteran, the gameplay focuses heavily on action. However, it’s not as excessive as the action in Resident Evil 5 or 6. Instead, it’s inspired by the intense and fast-paced combat of Resident Evil 4, and appears to be based more closely on the 2023 remake, judging by the visuals shown.
Because Leon is a seasoned veteran haunted by his past, his gameplay focuses heavily on action.
Playing this character will likely feature powerful, over-the-top kicks in close combat, and you can even expect to wield incredibly loud chainsaws!
Grace’s campaign takes a different approach, emphasizing scary atmospheres over action. She builds tension by largely removing music, creating a feeling of dread similar to what you’d find in games like Resident Evil 2 and 7.
The gameplay footage revealed that Leon and Grace will likely have very different experiences. Leon’s sections were shown from a third-person perspective, while Grace’s were in first-person, possibly suggesting how players will connect with each character’s story.
Human Echoes and Blood-Based Survival
I’m really excited about the two-part campaign, but the gameplay details revealed later actually mean more to me as a long-time Resident Evil player.
The game’s showcase revealed a particularly unsettling new zombie type – these enemies seem more human and display surprising intelligence. They appear to retain fragments of their past lives, manifesting as ingrained habits. For example, a zombie who used to work as a janitor might still be found mechanically cleaning windows, driven by lingering muscle memory.
Nakanishi explained that many zombies still act as they did when they were alive. Paying attention to these familiar behaviors will help you avoid them or defeat them, making the game more interesting.
This new feature greatly enhances gameplay. Resident Evil games already let you choose to fight or avoid zombies based on your skill, and this adds another layer to that established system!
I’m also thrilled to share that the crafting system, traditionally focused on collecting colored herbs, is getting a dark and interesting update. Players can now use infected blood from zombies to create crucial injectors needed to survive.
To keep your supplies full, you’ll eventually have to fight enemies instead of just avoiding them. The game director explained that crafting needs blood, which you can only get by defeating enemies.
The showcase concluded with a surprise reveal of new partnerships. Capcom is working with Porsche to create a car for Leon within the game, and with Hamilton to design the watches worn by the main characters.
Collectors will be excited to hear about incredibly detailed Leon and Grace figures coming in 1/6 scale – though I’m personally avoiding them to save money! There’s also a special Resident Evil Requiem themed Switch 2 Pro Controller, which I’m seriously considering buying.
