Resident Evil’s Biggest Cliffhangers and Unresolved Plot Threads

The Resident Evil series is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Since the first game in 1996, Capcom has released more than 30 RE titles, including spin-offs and online games like Resident Evil Re:Verse. Most of these games focus on storytelling, with some contributing to the overall Resident Evil saga and others offering independent experiences.

With so many Resident Evil games available, it’s understandable that the series has some confusing plot points, inconsistencies, and unresolved storylines. Most games do offer clear endings – often with a dramatic finale – but some leave questions unanswered. While some of these mysteries are eventually explained, others have remained unsolved for years.

These are the biggest Resident Evil cliffhangers and unresolved plot threads (so far).

This article reveals major spoilers for the entire Resident Evil series, so be warned if you haven’t played or watched it yet.

Where Are Billy and Steve? (Resident Evil Zero and Code: Veronica)

In Resident Evil Zero, players meet Billy Coen, a former convict who joins forces with Rebecca Chambers to fight through a night filled with zombies, monsters, and dangerous creatures. At the game’s conclusion, Rebecca helps Billy escape by faking his death and taking his dog tags. He’s never seen again, and fans have often wondered about his fate. Considering the zombie-infested woods around Raccoon City at that time, many have questioned whether Billy survived his escape or met his end shortly after the events of Resident Evil Zero.

Steve Burnside’s ultimate fate is left unclear. In Resident Evil – Code: Veronica, he turns into a monster, but Wesker implies he’ll use Steve’s body for research and even suggests Steve might still be alive. While we haven’t gotten any concrete answers about this, it’s likely Wesker’s future actions benefited from experiments performed on Steve’s remains.

Recent leaks and rumors indicate that Capcom is planning full remakes of Resident Evil Zero and Resident Evil – Code: Veronica. If these reports are accurate, the remakes could offer a chance to resolve some lingering plot points involving the characters Billy and Steve, although it’s also possible their stories won’t be changed.

Raymond, Jessica, and the T-Abyss Virus (Resident Evil: Revelations)

Since Resident Evil: Revelations takes place before Resident Evil 5, most players didn’t anticipate any unresolved storylines. However, the scene after the credits shows Raymond giving Jessica a sample of the T-Abyss virus – something that’s never been referenced again. This is typical for many of the new characters introduced in Revelations, as they haven’t reappeared in subsequent games either.

Jake Muller (Resident Evil 6)

In Resident Evil 6, it’s revealed that Jake Muller is the son of Albert Wesker, inheriting similar superhuman abilities. The game strongly suggested Jake would become a central character, traveling the world to combat bio-weapons. However, he hasn’t appeared in any subsequent Resident Evil titles. This absence likely stems from the series shifting direction after the somewhat disappointing response to Resident Evil 6, though this remains unconfirmed.

It’s not just the games that leave storylines hanging. Other Resident Evil adaptations also have unresolved plots. For example, the Netflix series introduced Ada Wong but was canceled after one season, so her story never continued. The book series by S.D. Perry ended with Zero, leaving the fate of Umbrella and a character named Trent unanswered. Even the movie Welcome to Raccoon City left things open-ended, with Umbrella hiding the truth about the Raccoon City disaster and Wesker being brought back to life by Ada Wong.

Evil Natalia (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

Resident Evil: Revelations 2 has several different endings, but the official one leaves players with an unresolved cliffhanger that hasn’t been addressed in any subsequent game. In this ending, Barry, Claire, Moira, and Natalia appear to defeat Alex Wesker and stop her from transferring her mind into Natalia. However, the game subtly suggests that Alex is still controlling Natalia, even after she’s living with the Burton family. Released in 2015, this mystery has remained unsolved for over eleven years, and players are still waiting to find out what happens with Natalia and the Burtons.

BSAA Bioweapons, and Who Ran Up to Rose? (Resident Evil Village)

Resident Evil Village successfully concludes Ethan Winters’ story and expands on the broader Resident Evil universe, but it also leaves some plot points unresolved. For example, Chris Redfield discovers that the BSAA agents sent to the village were actually bio-weapons, and while he investigates, this mystery hasn’t been fully explained, even with the release of Resident Evil Requiem.

The person who approached Rose in the extra scene after the credits of Village is still a mystery. Capcom released downloadable content for Resident Evil Village centered around Rose, but we still don’t know the identity of this figure. The most popular idea is that it’s her father, Ethan, who somehow lived through the events of the game, but it’s currently unconfirmed.

Where is Chris Anyway? (Resident Evil Requiem)

Although Chris Redfield doesn’t appear in Resident Evil Requiem, he sends a team from his BSAA unit to assist Leon and Grace near the game’s end. One of the soldiers mentions a message for Leon from Chris, but the contents are never revealed. Sherry also inquires about Chris’s whereabouts, and Leon simply says he expects to cross paths with him eventually. This could hint at a continuation of the storyline involving the bioweapon soldiers from Village, but it’s uncertain. The mystery might be addressed in a future Resident Evil game, potentially Resident Evil 10, or perhaps in upcoming DLC for Requiem. For now, it’s just the newest addition to the many unanswered questions and unresolved storylines in the Resident Evil series.
