Respawn Blocks Apex Legends on Linux

As a dedicated gamer who has been using Linux for my Steam Deck for quite some time now, I find Respawn’s decision to block access to Apex Legends on Linux platforms rather disheartening. I understand their concerns about cheating, but it seems like they’re throwing the baby out with the bathwater here. I mean, I haven’t even met a cheater in Apex Legends on my Steam Deck!

In simpler terms, it means that Respawn Entertainment has declared that from now on, players who use the Linux operating system won’t be able to enjoy Apex Legends. This also applies to people playing Apex Legends on Steam Deck, a device where this game is currently available for purchase in their marketplace.

Respawn says its a decision made to fight issues with cheating in the game.

To fight cheating in Apex, we’ve found that the Linux Operating System can be used for numerous powerful exploits and hacks. Consequently, we have chosen to restrict access to the game from Linux Operating Systems.

The studio says that the move will impact just a “small number” of players. However, the move will “meaningfully reduce instances of cheating in [the] game.”

From my perspective as an enthusiast, when it comes to making decisions about platform support, Respawn highlights some concerns regarding Linux’s openness. They argue that this openness can make Linux a preferred choice for cheaters and those who develop cheats due to the ease of manipulating the system. Moreover, they mention that detecting cheats on Linux can be more challenging compared to other platforms.

They mentioned that the growth rate is so significant that it necessitates a disproportionate amount of focus and care from the team, considering the modest size of the platform.

“We had to weigh the decision on the number of players who were legitimately playing on Linux/the Steam Deck versus the greater health of the population of players for Apex. While the population of Linux users is small, their impact infected a fair amount of players’ games.”

For Steam Deck users who are now unable to play Apex Legends, Respawn explains that they couldn’t find a dependable method to tell a genuine Steam Deck from a fraudulent cheat masquerading as one. If you wish to continue playing Apex Legends on your Steam Deck, the solution provided by Respawn is to switch the device’s operating system from Linux to Windows.
