Summary
- Housemarque opts to focus on premium game releases over live-service games.
- Developers aim to provide an experience that does not require constant gameplay.
- Housemarque’s next game Saros expected in 2026 will continue their success without live-service elements.
As an increasing number of developers choose to experiment with live services, Developer Housemarque has no plans to explore that avenue.
Housemarque, the creator of Returnal, isn’t new to developing multiplayer games, having produced popular games like Dead Nation, NEX Machina, Resogun, and others. Yet, this doesn’t necessarily imply that they will apply their past experiences to create live-service games instead.
Housemarque Not Keen On Live-Service Games As Long As Premium Games Continue To Do Well

In an interview with Eurogamer, Ilari Kuittinen, head of the studio, and Gregory Louden, the creative director, revealed that their primary goal is not to pursue live-service or free-to-play models, but instead concentrate on releasing premium games. According to Louden, as long as there’s a market for premium games, Housemarque will continue to be a studio dedicated to this sector.
It’s reassuring to learn that the developers make clear they don’t expect players to devote all their spare time to gaming, a stance that feels quite refreshing.
According to Kuittinen, our approach is that each of our games offers an immersive experience during a specific period in your life, which you can enjoy over several days or weeks. This is similar to how TV series or movies become significant parts of someone’s life at certain stages. I find it quite intriguing that our games don’t require you to dedicate all of your spare time to them.
Kuittinen explained, “Once you possess it, there’s some benefit. You might revisit it, but it’s not essential to keep engaging with it throughout your lifetime.
It’s reassuring to learn that Housemarque isn’t working on a game requiring constant player engagement, unlike some other Sony-published titles that were recently canceled. Although Concord faced failure, Sony continues to develop Marathon, set for release in September. Additionally, there’s Fairgame$, whose studio head left under mysterious circumstances, and rumors suggest it may have been delayed earlier this year.
For Housemarque, their upcoming game, Saros, seems poised to carry on their streak of successful titles without relying on a live-service component. Details are scarce, but we do know that Saros is scheduled for release on PlayStation 5 in the year 2026.
