Revealed: Switch 2 Could Come with Hidden Mic – Game-Changing Feature Uncovered in Trailer!

Summary

  • The Nintendo Switch 2 may have an integrated microphone.
  • What looks like a microphone hole was spotted in the Switch 2 reveal trailer, located near the right-hand side of the device’s top edge.
  • While the Switch lacks an integrated microphone, the Wii U GamePad, 3DS, and NDS all included one.

In the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, there could be a built-in microphone. This potential inclusion, something that isn’t new to Nintendo, has been hinted at following a thorough examination of the Switch 2 unveiling video.

Nintendo formally revealed details about its upcoming console in a two-minute video premiere on January 16th. Since then, numerous discussions have surfaced, shedding light on features of the Switch 2 and even a new version of the popular game, Super Mario Kart, that were initially less noticeable.

Following on from this pattern, Nintendo Life recently shared an in-depth analysis of the Switch 2 unveiling trailer on their YouTube channel. Although many of its discoveries have been widely discussed, there’s one aspect that has thus far escaped even the keenest of eyes: it appears the new console may include a microphone slot. This opening is strategically placed along the top edge on the right-hand side, just to the right of the device’s game cartridge reader. While the hole could potentially serve another function, the most plausible explanation is that it accommodates a microphone.

Switch 2 Wouldn’t Be the First Nintendo Console With a Microphone

On previous Nintendo consoles like the Wii U GamePad, 3DS, and NDS, microphones were included. However, the Nintendo Switch does not have one built-in. Previously, Nintendo positioned the mic near the bottom of their devices. It remains a mystery why they chose to reverse this design for the Switch. Since the Joy-Cons on the Switch are detachable, some people might assume that if Nintendo intended to add a microphone, it would be included in one of the controllers. One possible reason for not doing so is to reduce the cost of manufacturing the Joy-Cons. It’s worth noting that there’s still a possibility that the potential future Switch 2 version of the Pro controller might include a microphone, similar to the PS5’s DualSense controller.

Nintendo Switch 2 Was Already Rumored to Have Voice Chat Before Its Reveal

Before the trailer suggested it might include an integrated microphone, there were whispers about Nintendo’s upcoming console having voice chat support. These rumors started when some digging (datamining) revealed references to “Campus,” a potential feature of Switch 2, which could provide group and voice chat options for Nintendo Switch Online members.

If the potential next version of the Switch does indeed come equipped with a microphone, this feature could be officially unveiled on April 2nd. This is the day of Nintendo Direct, a special presentation dedicated to providing new insights about the Switch 2. Apart from showcasing a closer look at the forthcoming console, the April 2nd broadcast may also disclose details regarding its release date and the lineup of launch games.
