As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the upcoming sequel to Journey to the Savage Planet, Revenge of the Savage Planet, has me absolutely thrilled! The unique and bizarre creatures featured in the game are right up my alley; I’ve always had a soft spot for games with a strong focus on fauna.
One standout aspect of the 2020 action-adventure game, “Journey to the Savage Planet,” was its unique creatures, ranging from endearing to downright unsettling, such as Barfer and Floopsnoot. The forthcoming sequel, titled “Planet’s Retaliation,” promises to introduce even more bizarre wildlife for players to uncover across multiple (possibly additional) planets. The design of these creatures emphasizes a balance between cuteness and disgusting, aiming to make each creature distinct and memorable amidst the others.
In the design phase of Raccoon Logic’s project, crafting the characters was a particularly enjoyable aspect for the team. Their aim was to develop entities that were both earthly yet otherworldly, as described by creative director Alex Hutchinson. The creatures and flora in “Revenge of the Savage Planet” share some familiar traits with Earth-dwelling beings, but always incorporate an unexpected twist to set them apart as distinct and extraordinary. Furthermore, the team aimed to elevate the role of these characters within the game. This was achieved by incorporating features that enable players to capture creatures and engage with them in their Habitat.
Mushrooms, Monkeys, and More
Among the initial beings players will meet in “Revenge of the Savage Planet” is the quirky “brain-shroom,” a tiny, easily tossable mushroom resembling a ball. As the adventure unfolds, the planet’s denizens grow increasingly peculiar. Some gooey creatures split when fired upon and can only be subdued with careful use of water. Barrier trees block progress in certain areas, refusing to let players pass unless they are adequately fed first. The undergrowth teems with raccoon-like creatures reminiscent of the studio’s name, Raccoon Logic, who react to human presence with a blend of fear and fury. Some beings are friendly, others hostile, but all are uniquely remarkable.
In the sci-fi adventure “Revenge of the Savage Planet”, the most striking invention is undoubtedly the creatures known as Babutts, which are essentially baboon-like beings with their posterior regions serving as their faces. They have the peculiarity of expelling liquid from these facial areas, though the nature of this fluid remains unspecified within the game itself. Game designer Hutchinson shared that the team took great pride in crafting the Babutt’s design, even considering featuring it on the physical cover of the game. However, their plans were thwarted when the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) disapproved and required a redesign instead.
“Our artwork was marked as inappropriate due to nudity. I explained that it depicted a face, not a body part, but they didn’t pay attention. As a result, we needed to reshoot and adjust our cover design.”
Revenge Features More Creature Interactivity
The Raccoon Logic developers categorized both Savage Planet games as ‘collect-a-thons’, where players are encouraged to scan and study all types of wildlife they encounter during their planetary exploration for a comprehensive grasp. Revenge of the Savage Planet builds on this by introducing the feature to capture and keep creatures in a Habitat, offering various rewards and upgrades depending on the collected creature’s ranking. Furthermore, engaging with creatures through scanning and interaction helps players complete in-game encyclopedias more fully, potentially earning them unique rewards such as XCOM-style ‘disturbing images’ of the planets’ flora and fauna.
At this point, Raccoon Logic hasn’t disclosed exactly how many creatures will appear in “Revenge of the Savage Planet,” but they have made it clear that there will be more than were seen in “Journey.” The game is slated for release across various consoles in 2025, and there might also be merchandise showcasing the game’s diverse and peculiar inhabitants. So, a Babutt plushie could potentially become the must-have toy sensation of 2025.
