Revive NetherRealm’s Multiverse Mode for Next Game

It remains unclear whether NetherRealm’s upcoming game will be an Injustice or Mortal Kombat title, but one standout feature from Injustice 2 should undeniably make a comeback. Known for pushing the boundaries with their intellectual properties, this is evident in recent developments like the addition of Invasions and Kameos in Mortal Kombat 1. However, not every experiment leads to success initially, but Injustice 2 struck gold with one of its features, which could be seen as a refined version of something previously seen in Mortal Kombat 1. For their next project, it would be wise to bring this successful concept back for another round.

Despite uncertainty about the future of the Injustice series, there’s strong potential for its return. Known as the top DC fighting franchise from the previous gaming era, Injustice has only produced two games so far. Set in an alternate reality where Superman turned into a dictator, Injustice features iconic DC characters engaging in one-on-one battles. Much like Mortal Kombat, it employs mechanics that were refined by its developer, NetherRealm Studios, who also produced the latter series. Injustice 2 was a well-received game, and fans eagerly anticipate how an Injustice 3 could build on its successes.

Injustice 2’s Multiverse Could Be a Source of Inspiration For NetherRealm

Injustice 2’s Multiverse Was an Evolution of Mortal Kombat’s Towers

Given all factors, it seems that NetherRealm’s next game might be most effectively shaped around the Multiverse mechanic seen in Injustice 2. This feature allows players to take their chosen character across various universes, each containing a series of fight towers with unique modifications. These towers come with brief introductions that help establish the story for each tower. By conquering these battles, players earn experience for their selected fighter, as well as credits and new gear items, which offer stats for Multiverse mode in addition to visual upgrades. Although Injustice 2’s Multiverse shares some similarities with Mortal Kombat’s towers, it offers a distinct character of its own.

Mortal Kombat 1’s Invasions Wasn’t Quite a Multiverse Successor

In contrast to the tower-based structure in Mortal Kombat 1’s Invasions mode, there are distinct variations. Instead of towers, Invasions predominantly consists of standalone battles spread across multiple maps that players navigate. Unlike seasons in Invasions which can span several months, Multiverse swiftly introduces new universes. Both modes serve as avenues for unlocking additional content for players, but Multiverse potentially offers more diverse opportunities for interaction.

Although the multiverse in “Injustice 2” shares some resemblance with that of “Mortal Kombat’ towers, it offers a distinctive flair of its own.

Any NetherRealm Game Could Bring Back Multiverse Mode

It’s possible that the concept of the Multiverse might show up in the upcoming Mortal Kombat game, taking over from the Invasions mode in the original Mortal Kombat. The original game introduced the idea of a Mortal Kombat multiverse, which was also the foundation for the Invasions mode. So, it’s not too far-fetched to imagine a Multiverse mode where characters like Liu Kang or Geras could use their powers to transport fighters to different universes for battles. Furthermore, since Injustice 2 featured a Multiverse, it seems logical that this concept might reappear in Injustice 3 as well. Whatever NetherRealm decides to do next, the Multiverse is likely to make a return.

The single-player mode known as Multiverse was fantastic and deserves to make a comeback, whether it’s in Mortal Kombat, Injustice, or a Marvel game from NetherRealm. It would be unfortunate if this mode were left out. Although NetherRealm might have delved deeper into the concept of Invasions, Multiverse still seems like a more practical alternative. Additionally, a new iteration could potentially incorporate additional features that weren’t found in Injustice 2’s interpretation of the mode. The future game from NetherRealm is unknown, but hopefully, the Multiverse mode from Injustice 2 will be included in it.
