In the perspective of gamers, World of Warcraft’s eighth expansion, named Shadowlands, was accused of numerous issues. Yet, one point that went unnoticed by many was the vanishing act of a secondary profession, which has not reappeared since then.

Tertiary jobs like fishing or first aid (before Battle for Azeroth) are professions that every character can pick up, irrespective of their other choices. Archaeology is one such job. This profession was introduced in “World of Warcraft: Cataclysm” and offered a captivating way for players with a collecting instinct to discover more about the world of Azeroth.

Archaeology Is World of Warcraft’s Lore-Centric Profession

Players traverse the globe, guided by locations on their maps for excavation sites. They employ a ‘hot or cold’ system to zero in on pieces of artifact fragments. Accumulating enough fragments allows players to construct artifacts, enhancing the richness and authenticity of each civilization. The historical tidbits were worth noting, but there were also lasting benefits such as World of Warcraft toys and even mounts to be gathered.

When Shadowlands came out towards the close of 2020, eager archaeologists promptly observed that there were no excavation sites in any of the game’s five zones. This raised eyebrows since it seemed unlikely that Blizzard Entertainment, creators of World of Warcraft, would overlook such a minor addition considering its potential to deepen the expansion’s narrative and offer additional content for players seeking distraction. Some speculated that this omission might be due to the pandemic, but with Dragonflight’s release and then The War Within following suit, archaeology remains conspicuously absent from the game.

Unusually, Dragonflight introduced Secret Finding as a fresh pastime to engage inquisitive players. It mirrored the same thirst for adventure and meticulousness that archaeologists possessed, yet it only faintly echoed the neglected profession it aimed to replace. Now, there was no system to record the discoveries made or their impact on the global storyline. Players could no longer exhibit pristine artifacts in city spots, leaving the complexities of enigmatic races such as centaurs, dragons, niffen, and gnolls shrouded in mystery.

Archaeology Should Be Brought Back to WoW

World of Warcraft doesn’t require archaeology, but it noticeably lacks depth without it. The significance becomes clear when archaeology is the primary way to interact with that culture. For instance, the Burning Legion has been present in numerous zones within World of Warcraft for years, yet archaeological excavations on the Broken Isles revealed that not all races who joined the Legion are prone to unrestrained fury and aggression. Many Legion soldiers carry a small Orb of Inner Chaos to maintain their behavior suitable for a destructive force.

The importance of details in creating immersive fantasy worlds cannot be overstated. Games such as Baldur’s Gate 3 demonstrate that players eagerly explore every nook and cranny, seeking out even the smallest bits of lore, often for mere speculation. To maintain a complex fictional universe like Azeroth’s in the minds of players, it is crucial to hide clues to its rich history throughout the game world. This sense of discovery should always keep players intrigued and their sense of wonder alive.
