In the third season of Re:Zero, titled “Re:Zero Season 3, Episode 10 – The Crusade Against Greed,” Subaru and his companions carry on their struggle against the Witch’s Cult. Unlike some previous episodes that delve into emotional and psychological depths, this one is an all-out action spectacle from start to finish. The city of Priestella, a fortress of water, is under siege, and the animation and music in the battle sequences are exceptional.

In the grand tapestry of conflicts unfolding across Priestella, this installment zeroes in on three distinct battles. First, I found myself witnessing Capella’s unexpected visit to the ailing Crusch. Next, I bore witness to the intense struggle between Subaru, Reinhard, and Emilia against Regulus. Lastly, the battle between Priscilla, Liliana, and Sirius also caught my attention. However, it’s clear that this episode centers predominantly on Subaru’s team’s exploits.

The Archbishop of Lust’s Attack on Crusch

A Double Ambush

In the last scene from the previous episode, it turned out that the Archbishop of Lust, Capella Emerada Lugunica, wasn’t present at the battle between Garfiel and Wilhelm against her minions. Instead, she was found in Crusch’s room. This time around, we learned that the figure on the bed wasn’t actually Crusch, but Anastasia Hoshin, who had tricked Capella with a trap. The battle itself was shown the least out of the three, and its final result remains uncertain.

In contrast, she was seen wielding weapons and engaging in combat against Capella for the first time. Previously, Anastasia had been working behind the scenes as a tactician and strategist. It’s thrilling to witness her becoming more involved in the series. Yet, this development also underscores the gravity of the current situation, as someone like her is now compelled to join the battlefront.

Priscilla’s Attack on the Archbishop of Wrath

Poor (Lucky?) Liliana

Priscilla and Liliana had an intriguing meeting with the Archbishop of Wrath, named Sirius. Despite Sirius using her Soulwashing ability on Liliana, Priscilla was able to bring Liliana back to her senses by giving her a kiss. The story doesn’t delve into this, but that wasn’t merely for entertainment purposes. In fact, Priscilla possesses a unique power called Soul Marriage, which enables her to pass along strength to someone she is bonded with through love. Here, Priscilla transferred her resistance to Sirius’ Soulwashing to Liliana in this instance.

Things become even more intriguing when Priscilla and Sirius engage in a spat. Sirius utters three phrases: “Iris and the Thorn King,” “Teleos’ Rose Knight,” and “Magritzer’s Gibbet,” which enraged Priscilla. In this particular episode, the anime doesn’t clarify these terms, but if you don’t mind a little spoiler, they are book titles with significant personal ties to Priscilla. They were used to provoke Priscilla in an attempt to weaken her mental barriers so that Sirius could gain an advantage.

Finding Greed’s Weakness

In this episode’s central conflict, it’s Subaru, Reinhard, and Emilia taking on the Archbishop of Greed, Regulus Corneas. Previously shown, Regulus appears invulnerable to physical harm. This means while Reinhard may be stronger, they can’t inflict damage on him as of yet. The episode mainly delves into uncovering a hidden weakness, and by the end, Subaru manages to understand how Regulus wields his Authority of Greed.

In simpler terms, Subaru refers to Regulus’ power as “Lion’s Heart,” which has the ability to halt time for his body, keeping it in its current state unchangeable. This is why, despite Reinhard and Emilia’s repeated attempts to harm him, they are unable to injure him. However, understanding that Regulus possesses this power doesn’t necessarily reveal his weakness. It will be intriguing to find out how Subaru and the others manage to circumvent the Lion’s Heart.

Your real power as an Authority is like hitting the pause button within a game. Let me suggest another name: the ‘Lion’s Heart,’ which refers to the extraordinary talent of freezing time for yourself.

In the battle against Regulus, it was the most thrilling yet, but it seemed as though they were eliminating Reinhard in an underhanded manner. Regulus would send him crashing into buildings or hurling him into the sky, and more often than not, Reinhard would vanish for extended periods throughout each episode. This is likely because Reinhard is exceptionally powerful, and if he took on all the combat himself, it might become monotonous. However, I can’t help but feel that they could have devised a more satisfactory approach to portray his strength and skill.

The Other Battles in Priestella

In this episode of Re:Zero season 3, episode 9 titled “City Scramble”, we find that Otto, Felt, and their group are engaged in a battle with one of Gluttony’s Archbishops, Lye Batenkaitos. Meanwhile, Julius and Ricardo are facing off against another of Gluttony’s Archbishops, Roy Alphard. Additionally, Garfiel and Wilhelm are battling against the reanimated minions of Lust, as well as Wilhelm’s deceased wife, Theresia. This episode did not delve into the resolution of these ongoing battles due to the multitude of events occurring simultaneously.
