Ridley Scott Is ‘Done’ Making Alien Movies

Remarkably, iconic filmmaker Ridley Scott has announced his departure from the Alien series, having been its pioneer since its inception in 1979.

As a die-hard fan, I’ve been reflecting on what Scott shared during his chat with ScreenRant. He candidly discussed his complex emotions towards the iconic series and how he perceives its impact in the vast expanse of science fiction today.

During a discussion commemorating the 20th anniversary of his Crusades-themed movie “Kingdom of Heaven,” Scott expressed his thoughts on how the science fiction series seemed to lose its vitality following the release of its fourth part.

I believe my work was excellent, and I found Jim’s (Cameron) Aliens to be impressive. However, I must admit that the rest didn’t measure up. Frankly, it struck me as the end of a franchise that should have been on par with Star Trek or Star Wars, which I think are truly outstanding.

Speaking highly of both 2001: A Space Odyssey and Star Wars, Scott appeared to express admiration for the former film, while also expressing enthusiasm for his return to filmmaking with Prometheus in 2012.

He further expressed his disapproval towards the increasing reliance on visual effects in cinema, commenting: “Visual effects serve as an improvement and ideally should help save costs, not lead to additional expenditure due to a poorly thought-out film. Unfortunately, this trend appears to be occurring more frequently.

What’s Next For The Alien Franchise?

Even though Scott might not be leading the Xenomorph projects anymore, it looks like the franchise will continue for quite some time. After Alien: Romulus in 2024, there don’t seem to be any new movies in production yet. However, the TV series titled Alien: Earth, helmed by Noah Hawley, is slated to premiere as early as August this year.

It seems that the sequel for Alien: Isolation is still being worked on by developers for gaming enthusiasts, while the virtual reality game Alien: Rogue Incursion is regularly updated and enhanced.

Dark Descent has also been great news for the franchise within the gaming industry, as it has expanded the series into the realm of tactical Real-Time Strategy games and received overwhelmingly positive feedback.

In essence, Ridley Scott’s contribution to the series cannot be overstated; indeed, without his involvement, it wouldn’t even be here in the first place.
