As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the enchanting world of Anima Trees, I can confidently say that this question is one of the most frequently asked by newcomers to the game. The struggle of watching an Anima Tree stand barren and lifeless while your pawns long for the nourishing Anima Grass is indeed a heart-wrenching sight.
In simpler terms, “Rimworld” is a complex game where players learn through trial and error, which might make grasping the intricacies of its mechanics challenging. However, mastering the use and management of Anima Trees can yield significant rewards in the form of Psylinks, one of the game’s strongest features.
To successfully obtain Psylinks from the Anima Tree, players need to care for it correctly and conduct a specific ceremony involving an appropriate piece. This text will guide you through the process of linking with the Anima Tree, potential issues with the ritual, as well as methods for transferring the tree to a new location.
What Is An Anima Tree?
In the game Rimworld, Anima Trees are found on many types of terrain, with the exception of Extreme Deserts and Ice Sheet biomes. The Anima Tree serves as a key method for players to instruct their characters in Psycasting, except they should be careful not to construct nearby, so as to harness its powers. Psycasting is a crucial asset for defending your colony against attackers, making it strongly recommended to establish Psylinks early on.
To ensure players don’t lose this valuable spawn during Rimworld’s assorted random events, these trees boast exceptional resilience against extreme temperatures and are fireproof and pollution-resistant. Furthermore, they can thrive in low light conditions without rotting like many crops. However, they can still be harmed by animals or events that damage trees (like Deforestors or Alphabeavers), leading to their destruction. Players should also be cautious as their pawns might accidentally order them to be cut down, resulting in the tree’s demise.
How To Use An Anima Tree
To make an Anima Tree productive, you need to nurture Anima Grass surrounding its base through meditation. By creating a Meditation Zone close by the tree and scheduling Natural Meditation-type figures for meditation sessions, Anima Grass (luminous green grass) will gradually grow around the tree’s foundation. After 20 pieces of Anima Grass have grown, pawns with a Tribal Origin can perform a ritual to connect with the tree, which then allows them to progressively increase their Psylink levels.
While they cannot bond with the tree, psychically deaf pawns can still stimulate Anima Grass Growth by meditating near an Anima Tree.
Who Can Bond With An Anima Tree?
As a gamer, I’ve found out that only certain characters, those with the Natural Meditation Focus background, can establish a connection with the Anima Tree. This unique trait is part of their backstory. To incorporate such a character into my game, I have two options: either capture one during gameplay or select one from the available pawns when choosing my starting team (which is most convenient when embarking on the Lost Tribe Scenario).
Instead of a single Garlean Tree being linked to by only one pawn, several pawns can connect to the same Anima Tree. However, each pawn must individually fulfill the linking criteria, and no two pawns can share Anima Grass.
How To Bond With The Anima Tree
After the tree gathers enough Anima Grass, click on it and choose the ‘Begin Ritual’ option at the bottom of your screen. In this menu, you can decide which character will connect with the Anima Tree and who will observe. This process takes five hours and uses 20 Anima Grass to produce Psylink, but each spectator causes a new Anima Grass to grow – making larger rituals more beneficial.
Why Isn’t My Anima Tree Growing Anima Grass?
Typically, Anima Grass fails to grow around an Anima Tree for two reasons.
- The pawns meditating near it lack the proper meditation focus type. Only pawns with a Natural Meditation Focus type can grow Anima Grass.
- Built structures such as furniture, walls, or power cables are placed too close to the tree.
How Close Can Buildings Be To An Anima Tree?
As a devoted fan, I’d like to share some insights about Anima Trees: They thrive in expansive, untouched environments, so it’s crucial to keep them at a distance when planning buildings. If you get too close, the tree’s powers will cease to function. When you select an Anima Tree, you’ll notice two circles illuminated around it. The inner circle signifies the necessary space for the tree to grow grass and connect with a pawn. The outer circle represents the radius where the tree starts losing effectiveness, but it still keeps functioning.
For the best results, players should leave the 36-tile radius around the tree free of all built items and structures.
How To Tell If A Pawn Has The Natural Meditation Focus Type
Identify the type of focus for your pawn character by examining their background story. Backgrounds that bestow the ‘Natural Meditation’ Focus Type are:
- Tribe Child – also applies to any child born and raised in a New Tribe or Lost Tribe playthrough
- Abandoned Child
- Reclusive Child
- Herder
- Scavenger
- Cave Child
- Sole Survivor (version mentioning raids)
- Vengeful Child
- Fire Keeper
- Hideaway
- Crash Baby
- Budding Artist
- Bully
- Bookworm
In certain instances, a character from a tribal society, like one selected in the New Tribe scenario, might not possess a backstory that aligns with the trait of Natural Meditation Focus due to a traumatic past such as being a Killer. On the other hand, characters with player-crafted histories may exhibit traits suggestive of tribal life but lack the Natural Meditation Focus ability; this applies to Accursed Child, Sole Survivor (the version referring to illness), and Forest Child.
How To Move An Anima Tree
Frequently, players may find themselves dealing with an Anima Tree that appears in an awkward spot. Yet, you can manipulate where the tree sprouts by cutting it down on your own tile, but this action will decrease your mood level. Consequently, the game will relocate the tree to a fresh, randomly chosen position.
Currently, there’s no recognized method for growing an Anima Tree or controlling its specific spawn point.
Consequences Of Cutting Down An Anima Tree
Cutting down the Anima Tree leads to a -6 moodlet named “Anima Wail” lasting for five days. Subsequently, another Anima Tree will grow somewhere on the same tile, but not near existing buildings, within a 30-day period. The time it sprouts is random and unpredictable.
