Rings of Power: Arondir, Explained

As a huge fan of both J.R.R. Tolkien’s books and Prime Video’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” I am absolutely thrilled to see new characters being introduced in this beautiful adaptation of Middle-earth’s rich lore. Arondir, played brilliantly by Ismael Cruz Córdova, is one such character who has captured my attention with his compelling backstory and complex relationships.

The debut season of Amazon Prime Video’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” aired in September 2022, introducing fans to an unexplored era in Middle-earth. In this fresh setting, depicted in works like “The Silmarillion,” a multitude of novel characters emerge. While some of these figures may be familiar to devoted fans who have delved into J.R.R. Tolkien’s supplementary texts, many are entirely new creations for the show. One such character is Arondir, portrayed by Ismael Cruz Córdova.

In Middle-earth’s Southlands, a band of elves including Arondir maintains vigil, cohabiting an expanse with a modest human population. Although inter-community relations are somewhat strained, Arondir remains committed to his guardian role. Unseen by them, a formidable enemy is gathering in the depths of the Southlands. This assemblage holds significant importance within “The Rings of Power” narrative, and poses a danger to Arondir, offering him the chance to demonstrate his full potential for viewers.

Who is Arondir?

Arondir is a Silvan Elf hailing from the destroyed land of Beleriand in Middle-earth’s ancient days, when it was ravaged during the war against Morgoth. In “The Rings of Power,” Arondir is presented as having lived among the Southlands inhabitants for an extended period. The text emphasizes that he frequently visits the village of Tirharad. Although an alliance exists between Middle-earth’s humans and elves in their quest to vanquish Morgoth, most people in the Southlands harbor disdain towards Arondir. A villager even uses the derogatory term “knife ears” – a racial slur for elves that was never employed by Tolkien in his original works.

I, an avid fan of the lore, can tell you that Arondir shares a deep bond with the village healer, Bronwyn. Their connection is apparent to all, transcending the boundaries of mere friendship. However, it’s important to note that elves, like Arondir, possess immortality, while humans, such as Bronwyn, do not. This fundamental difference in lifespans brings to mind the tale of Beren and Luthien, a tragic love story between an elf and a human. My fellow elves have cautioned me against succumbing to my feelings for her, reminding me of this age-old tale. Yet, Arondir’s heart remains steadfast, refusing to be swayed by these warnings. Unfortunately, before he could confess his love, Arondir was captured by orcs, leaving his emotions unspoken and his fate uncertain.

In the opening season of Rings of Power, Arondir demonstrates his valor and strength in battle. Determined to break free from the clutches of the corrupted elf Adar and his orc followers, he engages in several fierce skirmishes. Furthermore, there is a possibility that Adar could align with Sauron for an assault against the inhabitants of Tirharad. However, Arondir’s heroics during this attack are overshadowed by the devastating consequences: the eruption of Mount Doom, orchestrated by Adar, leading to the destruction of Tirharad and the transformation of the region into Mordor.

During the fierce clash, Bronwyn received a wounding arrow strike in her back. Swiftly acting, Arondir managed to whisk Bronwyn away to safety, allowing him to tend to her injuries and help her recover. In the upcoming second season of Rings of Power, Arondir is anticipated to assume a significant role.

What is a Silvan Elf?

Arondir is not the first Silvan Elf fans have seen onscreen in a Lord of the Rings project. The first and most notable appearance of a Silvan Elf was Legolas in The Fellowship of the Ring. However, some fans argue that he’s not a true Silvan Elf, since his father, Thranduil, is descended from a Sindar bloodline.

During the third age, the enigmatic Silvan Elves, occasionally called wood-elves, hail from the woodlands of Mirkwood and Lothlorien. Their lineage traces back to the Noldor elves, yet they possess a profound affinity for nature that sets them apart. Unlike their more renowned Noldor relatives residing in locales such as Rivendell, these elves prefer the secluded sanctuary of forests. As Beorn mentioned in “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” Silvan Elves exhibit less wisdom but exhibit a greater propensity for danger compared to their Noldor counterparts.

Is Arondir in the LOTR Books?

Rings of Power: Arondir, Explained

In the same vein as Tauriel from “The Hobbit” films, Arondir and Bronwyn, his romantic interest, are absent in J.R.R. Tolkien’s written works. Most of the characters inhabiting Tirharad for “Rings of Power” are original creations, designed to depict the Southlands prior to their transformation into Mordor. Though Mordor’s origins aren’t explicitly detailed in “The Lord of the Rings” or “The Hobbit” literature, there exist annotated notes that serve as inspiration for these Amazon Prime series adaptations.

As a devoted fan of J.R.R. Tolkien’s iconic “Lord of the Rings” universe, I was initially taken aback by the introduction of Arondir in the Prime Video series. Yet, upon reflection, his inclusion has brought new depth and richness to the lore that I hold dear. Creating original characters for a cherished franchise may be unsettling at first, but it doesn’t detract from the beauty and significance of what came before. Instead, it adds another layer of complexity and exploration within this magical world.
