The lead producer who used to work on World of Warcraft is now joining the team developing Riot Games’ new massively multiplayer online game.
Details are scarce about the new League of Legends MMO, except that it will take place in the world of Runeterra. League of Legends is also planned to receive a significant update, called ‘League Next,’ by 2027, but this article isn’t about that update. We’re focusing on the MMO instead.
Riot MMO Brings in World of Warcraft’s Raymond Bartos
Raymond Bartos, who led production on World of Warcraft, left Blizzard last month after three years with the company. During his time there, he played a key role in developing popular content like Plunderstorm and various updates to the game, including Remixes, gear improvements, Dungeon Followers, and Dastardly Duos. He’s now moving on to pursue new opportunities in game development.
I was so excited to hear that Bartos is joining Riot Games! He announced it on X, and he’s going to be a Senior Game Producer on their new MMO. Considering he worked on World of Warcraft for so long, his experience is going to be a huge asset. What really got to me, though, was what he said about Riot’s values. He mentioned that kindness, respect, and care aren’t just things they say there, but things the whole team actually lives by, and that was a big reason he made the move. It sounds like a really great environment!
I’m thrilled to announce I’m joining the team at Riot Games to work on their new MMO! Right from the start, I was drawn to Riot’s core values, and I was really impressed to see those values consistently reflected in everyone I spoke with during the interview process. It quickly became clear…

Riot Games last gave a substantial update on their upcoming MMO in 2024, when a co-founder discussed a major change in the project’s direction. This reset meant they would stop publicly discussing the game for “several years,” and they’ve largely stuck to that plan. Riot doesn’t want to simply recreate existing MMOs with a Runeterra theme; they’re aiming to develop something truly innovative and groundbreaking for the genre.
So, it’s kinda wild – Riot just congratulated the Hytale team on their early access launch, even though they cancelled the game six months ago. But honestly, I’m way more interested in the news about them snagging a lead producer from World of Warcraft! What do you guys think about that move?
