The influence of H.P. Lovecraft on horror genres, such as books, movies, and video games, is vast and profound. His stories, filled with cosmic dread and supernatural terrors, have fundamentally altered our understanding of fear by shifting it from mortal perils like death and pain to an overpowering sense of insignificance in a universe indifferent to human well-being. In the realm of video games, this Lovecraftian horror has seeped into titles such as Bloodborne, Call of Cthulhu, and Amnesia: The Dark Descent, each offering unique interpretations of his chilling narrative. Now, an independent studio named Vertpaint, boasting experience from major studios like Rockstar Games, is gearing up to launch Ritual Tides, a game that aims to take cosmic fear to new heights.
Game Rant recently spoke with CEO and creative director James Macleod from Vertpaint about how their upcoming game, Ritual Tides, aims to elevate Lovecraftian horror beyond expectations. In this conversation, Macleod shed light on what it takes for a work to be labeled as Lovecraftian and discussed the narrative and ambiance that Vertpaint intends to use to distinguish Ritual Tides within the genre, particularly in one of its most revered subgenres.
Ritual Tides Aims to Be One of the Darkest Lovecraftian Horror Games Yet
Ritual Tides Is Targeting Truly Authentic Lovecraftianism
In terms of horror games, only a handful of subgenres can match the heavy psychological impact and existential fear found in a Lovecraftian journey. Although tentacle monsters and ancient books are common elements, authentic cosmic horror games delve deeper, focusing not just on the terrifying creatures that hide in the darkness, but on the darkness itself and the unknown perils and enigmas lurking within. That’s the kind of terror Ritual Tides aspires to create, as it intends to pay tribute to Lovecraft’s work by offering players a genuinely immersive Lovecraftian gaming experience. When queried about the influences behind Ritual Tides and how Lovecraftian elements are woven into its narrative, Macleod explained the game’s inspiration and how these themes are incorporated into its story.
My affection for cosmic horror has been longstanding, with H.P. Lovecraft being its pioneer. When I ponder cosmic horror, it’s often the overwhelming sense of dread that comes to mind. Unlike characters from conventional horror movies like Jason, who may have supernatural abilities but are essentially human, entities such as Azathoth and Cthulhu are beyond comprehension – they’re unfathomable beings of immense knowledge and power. This love for the cosmic unknown has undeniably seeped into the game design and the narrative itself.
The essence of Ritual Tides, however, doesn’t just depend on the fear generated by external elements like nature or supernatural forces, but mainly on the profound emotional and philosophical implications of its themes. Instead of relying on conventional methods such as jump scares or terrifying monsters to engage players, Vertpaint decided to approach the game’s creation from a Lovecraftian perspective, delving into what it entails to confront evil at a deeply personal level – something that cannot be held or seen, but can only be felt, sensed, and lived.
Ritual Tides’ Story and Atmosphere Are the Heart and Soul of Its Horror
The tale of “Ritual Tides” ventures into a degree of darkness that many horror developers, often working with external publishers, shy away from. Typically, such projects yield a product focused more on shock rather than the authentic sense of fear and terror stemming from a thematically rich narrative. Conversely, the horror story in “Ritual Tides” is designed to convey the reasons behind the game’s terrifying world, resulting in a deeply unsettling and uncomfortable narrative. As Macleod explained further…
The narrative of this story delves deeply into some extremely bleak topics. These themes are not included for sensationalism, but rather to depict the true nature of the antagonistic force in this tale. There are indeed unsavory characters within the game, and we chose to portray them truthfully, rather than softening their impact. This decision was significant in creating the sense of fear that pervades the game.
The very dark themes in the game “Ritual Tides” were a key factor that led Vertpaint to self-publish instead of working with an external publisher. If they had chosen a publisher for “Ritual Tides“, as Macleod explained during the interview, “these themes wouldn’t have been permitted.” Although these themes would likely instill fear in players’ minds on their own, they are more impactful when combined with an oppressive ambiance, as the game was specifically designed to excel at creating such an atmosphere.

In “Ritual Tides,” Vertpaint employs a gradual approach typical of top-notch horror narratives, focusing more on generating tension and suspense rather than overloading the story with sudden shocking moments. Regarding the balance between atmosphere and startling surprises in “Ritual Tides,” Macleod explained…
Creating a sense of ambiance and suspense plays a crucial role, similar to how it does in a Lovecraft novel. I would frequently contend that the most memorable part of a Lovecraft story isn’t the climax or resolution. Instead, it’s the gradual accumulation of tension—the sensation that something frightening is about to happen—that leaves the deepest impression. In our work, we are emphasizing this aspect, particularly with visuals. Our goal is for the audience to feel fully immersed in the environment they are experiencing.
If Vertpaint achieves its goals, “Ritual Tides” might not simply be another entry in the cosmic horror genre. Instead, it could potentially stand out as one of the rare ones that truly grasps the essence of this subgenre. By focusing on the psychological, storytelling, and sensory aspects that are hallmarks of Lovecraft’s works, “Ritual Tides” aspires to unnerve, challenge, and disturb players at every step, distinguishing itself from other horror games that merely aim to scare.
