Robert Eggers’ Next Project May Be a Labyrinth Remake

Summary

  • Robert Eggers is set to remake the high fantasy film Labyrinth, moving away from his typical horror genre.
  • The new Labyrinth version is expected to use puppets instead of CGI, staying true to the original.
  • Despite initial negative reception, the original Labyrinth has developed a cult following, prompting various attempts at sequels.

As a long-time fan and admirer of Robert Eggers’ unique storytelling abilities, I am thrilled to see him stepping out of his comfort zone with the remake of Labyrinth. While he has proven himself as a master of horror with films like The Witch and Nosferatu, it is exciting to imagine what darker elements he will bring to this high fantasy film.

After the unveiling of Nosferatu, it seems that renowned director Robert Eggers has decided on his next creative endeavor. Interestingly enough, this upcoming project deviates from the horror genre similar to Nosferatu, but it does incorporate some distinctly ominous undertones.

Eggers boasts an expansive portfolio of movies spanning various genres, but he typically leans towards horror. However, his horror films deviate from typical slasher or straightforward ghost stories. Instead, they often present complex narratives that stimulate thought, such as “The Witch” and “The Lighthouse.” Despite the more conventional nature of “Nosferatu,” Eggers still infused his unique style into the vampire subgenre of horror.

Labyrinth Could Be Getting The Robert Eggers Treatment

Based on reports from industry expert Jeff Schneider, filmmaker Robert Eggers is planning to reimagine the classic high fantasy film “Labyrinth”. It’s speculated that Eggers will collaborate with the Jim Henson Workshop, responsible for the 1986 release featuring David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. Given this partnership, it seems likely that, similar to the original, the new adaptation will feature puppets instead of special effects or CGI for its characters and monsters. Additionally, this project may mark a departure from Eggers’ usual approach as it’s rumored to be his first work not intended for an R rating.

In its initial release, “Labyrinth” was helmed by the legendary Jim Henson and followed the tale of Sarah (Connelly), a 16-year old girl, who found herself navigating a complex maze to rescue her baby brother from the goblin king Jareth (Bowie). Throughout her journey, she sought assistance from various magical beings. The film had elements of music, but it was not strictly categorized as a musical. Generally regarded as one of Connelly’s breakthrough roles, this movie significantly boosted her acting career.

Initially, Jim Henson’s movie “Labyrinth” received little acclaim from both critics and viewers when it premiered in cinemas. However, with time, it developed a dedicated fanbase, leading some individuals to even endeavor on creating sequels for the film.

Over time, it has amassed a devoted fanbase, so much so that some have tried to create follow-ups themselves.

2016 saw the news that Nicole Perlman, known for her work on movies like Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain Marvel, Detective Pikachu, and Godzilla vs Kong: The New Empire, joined the team to write Labyrinth 2. Soon after, Fede Álvarez was brought on board to direct a fresh take on the movie, with Lisa Henson, daughter of Jim Henson, set to produce. At some juncture, Álvarez left the project and Sam Raimi took over. Unfortunately, the venture didn’t move forward. This could serve as a warning for the director of Nosferatu, who seems to be just starting work on this new version of Labyrinth.
