Keeping Control Over The IP

In 2003, Robert Kirkman teamed up with illustrators Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley to produce “Invincible.” Since then, Kirkman has remained dedicated to the series, not only writing all 144 issues of the comic (excluding spin-offs), but also taking on a writing role in the animated adaptation and an executive producer position. Likewise, Walker and Ottley have continued their involvement with the franchise, with Walker serving as lead character designer for the show and Ottley providing consultation for the series.

It’s not typical in most adaptations of comics that creators like Kirkman, Walker, and Ottley have such significant input, as acknowledged by Kirkman. In his conversation about Invincible VS, he mentioned their collaborative role in shaping Quarter Up’s fighting game.

In this specific game, we oversee every detail, from the artwork unveiled during character announcements to the design of each character’s poly model – right from its initial rough draft through to the final polish. Corey and Ryan often provide feedback like, “This costume line should run around the body this way, not that way.” This ensures a faithful representation for fans because we treat all aspects of our creation process with utmost seriousness, striving to make it as excellent as we can.

Speaking as a passionate fan, Kirkman stressed the significance he places in maintaining creative control over the Invincible universe. He elaborated on how his influence extends beyond Invincible VS, encompassing the entirety of this intellectual property.

Each day, there’s a constant stream of requests such as, “Can you check out this action figure design?” or “We’re launching this t-shirt,” or “Here’s some material for our role-playing game,” and it’s my job to review everything and ensure it aligns with our vision. In an industry where the likes of Marvel and DC may or may not extend invitations to movie premieres based on your work, it’s incredibly rewarding to have the creative freedom we do and the influence we wield in any decision-making process.

In comic book industry, it’s common for creators to work under contracts where they don’t fully own their creations, often missing out on the profits from highly successful characters, settings, and stories. Robert Kirkman and his team’s control over the future of ‘Invincible’ is an exception rather than a rule. It’s unfortunate that many creators lack the same level of power, as Kirkman puts it. However, the success of ‘Invincible’ might encourage more writers and artists to seek better representation and ownership deals. This could be achieved through negotiations within existing companies or by establishing new platforms, similar to what Image Comics did in the past.
