Rockstar Games Reportedly Offered $7500 to Use a Band Song in Grand Theft Auto 6

As a longtime fan of both Rockstar Games and Heaven 17, I find myself utterly amused by this recent turn of events. Martyn Ware’s band was offered $7500 to use their hit song ‘Temptation’ in Grand Theft Auto 6, but here’s the catch – no future royalties would be included in that deal.

As per Martyn Ware, one of the original members of Heaven 17, there are rumors that Rockstar Games has proposed paying the band $7500 to incorporate their track ‘Temptation’ into Grand Theft Auto 6.

Ware recently made the claim on X (formerly Twitter), where he said, “I was recently contacted by my publishers on behalf of Rockstar Games re the possibility of using Temptation on the new Grand Theft Auto 6. Naturally excited about the immense wealth that was about to head my way, I scrolled to the bottom of the email re the offer…”

He went on to say, “It cost $7,500 – a one-time payment for any future royalties from the game, indefinitely… To clarify, Grand Theft Auto 5 brought in; let me emphasize this… $8.6 billion dollars! But consider the publicity it generated… You’re just out of your mind.

If you’re curious about the details, this agreement allows Rockstar Games to incorporate Heaven 17’s song ‘Temptation’ into GTA 6, but they will only receive a one-time payment of $7500. Importantly, the band won’t be eligible for any future royalties from the use of their song in the game. The song is most likely to be featured on the radio stations within GTA 6.

As a gamer, I’ve been following the heated debates online about Ware’s tweet. Reddit user /u/HomeInternational69 raised an interesting point: “Is this game really that affordable? What could be a fairer price for it considering the $7500 tag, and the fact that the artists are also getting their work showcased to a massive gaming community?

User /u/-Aone commented, “They are asking for 7.5k for ‘any future royalties… It seems like Rockstar Games is attempting a daylight robbery.

Regardless of their decision, it appears that Heaven 17 values more than $7,500 to include one of their songs in Grand Theft Auto 6, taking into account any potential publicity; the artists themselves must decide if this amount is justified for them.
