Rocksteady Faces Layoffs After Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s Weak Sales

Rocksteady Faces Layoffs After Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s Weak Sales

As a longtime gaming enthusiast and industry observer with over two decades of immersion, I find it disheartening to see the layoffs at Rocksteady Studios. The studio behind one of my all-time favorite games (Batman: Arkham Asylum) is now grappling with a restructuring that has left over half of its QA department unemployed. It’s a stark reminder of the harsh realities of the gaming industry, where even the most beloved titles can sometimes fall short financially.

According to reports, Rocksteady Studios has let go more than half of their Quality Assurance (QA) team as part of their ongoing organizational changes.

According to Eurogamer’s report, there has been a significant downsize in the Quality Assurance (QA) department. The number of employees has dropped from 33 to 15, and the company is attributing this reduction to their ongoing restructuring process, which unfortunately led to job losses.

The report indicates that the impacted individuals are not limited to Quality Assurance staff alone. Some ex-employees have shared on social media platforms that they were terminated. Alexander Bell, a Lead Recruiter at Rocksteady, expressed his concern on LinkedIn, stating, “I believe I’ve just become part of an exclusive group of people who received notice about their position being eliminated while on paternity leave.”

In August 2024, Warner Bros. disclosed a 41% drop in gaming income compared to the previous year. Additionally, they admitted to suffering a loss of $200 million from their film “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.”

As I write this, it’s projected that by the year 2024, approximately 11,700 individuals will have experienced job losses in the gaming sector, with over 130 different companies being affected.

Rocksteady and Warner Bros. are yet to comment officially on the latest layoffs.
