In the first scene of Another Angle’s “Shadow of the Road“, Akira rescues Satoru from an impossible battle, causing both to lose their honor and become masterless samurai, or ronin. They struggle to find purpose in a world where their dishonor follows them. Akira suggests that honor can be regained, but life cannot. This complex dynamic shapes their bond as they navigate an imaginary feudal Japan together.
As a die-hard fan, I had the thrill of hearing directly from Marek Oleksiak, head honcho at Another Angle Games, about Satoru and Akira, along with other fascinating characters that tag along on our ronin’s adventure in “Shadow of the Road,” as he shared insights with Game Rant.
Shadow of the Road’s Ronin Duo
At the onset of the game, a confrontation between the shogunate’s troops and those devoted to the Emperor leaves me wounded and our mentor deceased. Akira manages to save me from the shogunate’s crushing defeat. Yet, this event robs us both of our honor. Akira contends that honor can be restored, but life, once lost, cannot be. This sets the stage for players, introducing us, the protagonists they’ll accompany throughout the game.
The bond between Akira and Satoru is profound, so much so that it was a significant factor in Owlcat selecting “Shadow of the Road” as one of the initial two games they chose to publish. This connection, combined with the narrative woven into their journey, caught Owlcat’s eye and ultimately led them to become involved in this project. In discussing the relationships portrayed in the game, including those players will encounter, Oleksiak stated…
In our game, there’s a multitude of decisions for players to make, each one significant in its own way. Some choices significantly alter the overall plot, while others impact the dynamic between characters, primarily the party members. The relationships among these characters are influenced by player decisions, shaping their interactions, dialogues, and agreements or disagreements. This relationship level, in turn, influences the combat system as well.
As a gamer immersed in this samurai-themed world, I find myself playing as two distinct characters: Satoru, the man who embodies the code of the samurai and carries the heavy burden of surviving the initial battle that left him deeply wounded in pride. Then there’s Akira, a character with a more irreverent demeanor, quick-tempered, and passionate to the core.
Initially, it might seem like Satoru is the main protagonist, but the creator, Oleksiak, ensures both characters share equal importance. This duality is clearly shown in the game mechanics, where we as players are given dialogue option prompts that allow us to choose how either Satoru or Akira responds to various situations. It’s an intriguing dynamic that keeps me engaged and curious about how their stories will unfold.
In a unique way, Akira’s albinism sets him apart, not necessarily in a practical sense but aesthetically. His exceptional archery skills demand heightened visual capabilities compared to real-life albinos, aligning with the common ‘albino sharpshooter’ stereotype seen in works like The Da Vinci Code. Despite this being an aesthetic choice, it adds to his image as an outsider. This image complements his fiery personality and deviation from the honor codes that Satoru adheres to, while also highlighting his unwavering loyalty towards his friend.
In contrast to others, Satoru embodies the traditional qualities of a samurai. He maintains his politeness and diplomacy, even when dealing with ill-mannered nobles. Professionally, he stifles Akira’s fiery spirit. However, beyond regaining his honor, Satoru yearns for something deeper: love and a family. In an unexpected manner, his journey in “Shadow of the Road” could potentially fulfill these longings for him.
Found Family on the Road
As a gamer, I’m excited to share that at least three other characters will be joining Satoru and Akira on our adventure. Interestingly, two of these companions have already made their appearance during the ongoing open alpha testing phase. However, it’s unclear if this complete group will make up the final roster for the game, but for now, this is who we’ve got. One character that stands out is Toshiro.
In this tale, Toshiro plays a significant role since he’s the youth rumored to alter the ongoing war’s outcome – a conflict that the shogunate is struggling to win. At just 14 years old, Toshiro yearns to demonstrate his worth and capabilities. His mother, Asuke, also becomes part of the group. She possesses the ability to transform into Jorougomo, an arachnid yokai, alongside Toshiro. Ishida serves as a bodyguard for Asuke’s husband and Toshiro’s stepfather, the domineering Kenjiro, who is intent on maintaining his position in his profession by being excessively aggressive. These characters grapple with differing moral perspectives, as Oleksiak explained, that form the core principles of the game.
In our game, we follow a shared moral code inspired by Bushido, named Kamido. This system encompasses rules with an emphasis on Japan’s magical and mystical elements. However, it’s important to note that not all members of our team adhere to this code. Some characters in the game have traveled outside of Japan and hold different perspectives on various matters. This will create a scenario for players where determining right from wrong may not be straightforward.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but notice how deeply the intricate dynamic with the game’s moral compass resonates within me. This complex bond echoes the broader societal transformation that Shadow of the Road masterfully portrays. The narrative mirrors Japan during its civil strife over pivotal issues such as border openings and technological dependence on foreign powers. In this fictional universe, deciding whether to embrace or reject the moral code becomes a significant and politically charged choice, reflecting the turbulent times that the game depicts so poignantly.
In the early stages of the game, Satoru and Akira find themselves surrounded by various groups competing for influence over Japan. Initially, they aligned with the Shogunate, a faction they still harbor some loyalty towards. It’s unclear if players can eventually side with the Emperor, but his forces are backed by the East Nippon Company, a powerful Western group boasting cutting-edge steampunk technology, aiming to shape Japan’s future. Throughout the world, supernatural beings known as Yokai exist, including Jorougomo, who can aid the Shogunate to maintain equilibrium among the factions.
