RPGs On Steam With Perfect Endings

This list contains spoilers!

Valve is expanding its presence in gaming with the upcoming Steam Machine, planned for release in 2026. Along with the Steam Deck and the Steam client for PCs, this new console will solidify Valve’s place in gaming culture. The open nature of the platform makes it easy to enjoy classic games, including some of the greatest RPGs originally released on the NES.

There are tons of fantastic RPGs available, catering to players who love strategic gameplay or fast-paced action. But crafting a good ending is tough! The games highlighted here have some of the most satisfying conclusions in the RPG world, and that’s why they made this list – though they’re just a small sample of the many great RPG endings out there.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Unhappy Little Trees

Wow, finishing Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was really emotional, no matter how it ended! I went for the good ending, and it was just… beautiful. Seeing Verso finally defeat Maelle and break apart that painted world felt so right. The scene with Maelle returning home to say goodbye to the real Verso at his grave was incredibly touching. Honestly, it left me with a lot to think about – I’m still wondering if the painted world is truly gone for good, and how that alternate Paris even works. But overall, it felt like a really satisfying conclusion to a fantastic story, and I’m really hoping we get more games in this series!

Undertale

Breaking Through Dirt

The game Undertale has multiple endings, but two are most discussed by fans, with one often considered the best. Players can choose a violent path, killing all enemies for a dark outcome, or a peaceful route, sparing everyone to unlock the true ending. This peaceful ending reveals the surprising truth about Flowey, a flower character who uniquely interacts with the player. Ultimately, it leads to the liberation of the underground monsters, who emerge to enjoy a hopeful future on the surface. It’s a heartwarming and optimistic ending that’s both satisfying and doesn’t demand too much from the player.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Father And Daughter Reunite

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt offers multiple endings, ranging from bleak to enigmatic, but the best one provides a satisfying conclusion by bringing Geralt and Ciri together. The story started with Geralt searching for his love, Yennifer, a quest quickly resolved at the beginning of the game in an unexpected turn of events. The focus then shifts to finding Ciri, who embarks on her own journey as a Witcher. Achieving the good ending means both Geralt and Ciri survive and thrive, with few remaining plot threads beyond Geralt hinting at a successor.

South Park: The Stick Of Truth

Zombie Junk

South Park: The Stick of Truth is widely considered the best video game based on the South Park series, though the competition hasn’t been very strong. In the game, you create your own character as the new kid in town and get caught up in an imaginary adventure where the children are fighting over a stick they believe has magical powers.

The stick’s appeal extends to adults, ultimately revealing a hidden government agency that’s creating Nazi zombies. This culminates in a chaotic final battle where Kenny becomes a zombie and the main villain fights completely exposed, making for an unforgettable and bizarre conclusion.

Mass Effect 2

A Dark Middle Chapter

Many fans love the darker, more complex stories found in the middle parts of a series, and Mass Effect 2 delivers exactly that. The game focuses on Commander Shepard rebuilding their crew and trying to warn the galactic council about a looming threat – the Reapers – which many dismiss as fantasy. The story takes a terrifying turn when a Reaper appears as a massive, Terminator-like being. Players who successfully defeat it and rescue their entire crew during the final mission are rewarded with a celebratory ending and a glimpse of what’s to come in the concluding chapters of the original Mass Effect trilogy.

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion

A Sad Sendoff

Players familiar with Final Fantasy 7 knew the general story of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion, which centers on Cloud’s friend, Zack Fair. The game details Zack’s journey climbing the ranks within the Shinra organization, and his struggles as friends and the company itself turn against him. The story culminates in a heartbreaking final battle where Zack, weakened by numerous attacks from Shinra soldiers, is ultimately defeated. Despite the sadness, the ending is impactful, solidifying Zack’s place in Final Fantasy lore and potentially making him as popular a hero as Cloud.

Kingdom Hearts

Conquering Evil Hearts

Despite its unusual premise, the original Kingdom Hearts, available in Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, boasts a strong cast and a straightforward story. Sora teams up with beloved Disney characters to protect various Disney worlds from the shadowy Heartless. He successfully rescues his friends Riku and Kairi, though their eventual separation is bittersweet – at least they’re safe! The game also expertly sets up future adventures without resorting to frustrating cliffhangers, a common issue in later installments. Featuring a fantastic final boss and a satisfying conclusion, Kingdom Hearts leaves players with a truly heroic feeling.

Metaphor: ReFantazio

I Just Can’t Wait To Be King

In Metaphor: ReFantazio, the game plays out like a drawn-out election where multiple characters compete to become the next ruler after the king’s death. Players can support anyone – from nobles and knights to common folk – and work to win over the public. Similar to Atlus’s Persona series, the game features structured daily segments and challenges that advance the story and determine who ultimately ascends to the throne.

The story concludes with a surprising revelation: Will, the hero, is actually a prince! He’s crowned in a triumphant ceremony, promising to create an open and welcoming land for everyone. With the villain defeated and all secrets revealed, the future looks bright for all the characters.

Yakuza: Like A Dragon

New Hero, New Rules

Yakuza: Like a Dragon is the seventh main game in the Yakuza series and a fresh starting point for new players, as it introduces a new protagonist, Ichiban Kasuga, and a new storyline. The game also changes from real-time action combat to a turn-based system. Players take on the role of Ichiban as he unravels a complex mystery involving Yakuza deaths, drug trafficking, and a crisis among the homeless. His investigation leads to a major conflict between rival Yakuza families desperate to hold onto their traditions. Beloved characters from previous games, like Goro Majima and Kazuma Kiryu, return to assist Ichiban, marking a significant moment for long-time fans.

Chrono Trigger

A High Quality Anime Ending

When Chrono Trigger came out for the SNES in 1995, it was remarkably innovative. One of its most groundbreaking features was the ability to reach different endings by traveling through time, and later versions of the game even added more. While everyone has a preferred ending, the anime ending is particularly memorable. This ending, first included in the PlayStation version and also available on Steam, provides a heartwarming conclusion where Crono and Marle get married, Frog transforms back into a human, Lucca returns to her inventions, and Ayla resumes her role as chief – a truly fairytale-like finish for an RPG.
