Most RPG fans enjoy being able to create and customize their characters with lots of options – it’s become a standard for the genre. Things like unique hairstyles, tattoos, and defining traits really help players feel connected to the world. Cyberpunk 2077 offers a particularly detailed character creator, letting you customize everything from appearance to… well, quite a lot, even down to nail polish. Surprisingly though, it’s not the most extensive character creator available.
As a huge fan of character customization, I’ve been looking at games that just offer a bit more than Cyberpunk 2077 does. Some have more choices for how your character looks, but others go even further with things like sliders and traits that actually impact how you play. Now, don’t get me wrong, I think Cyberpunk’s character creation is good, but there are definitely games out there where you can really lose yourself in making a character and feel like you’ve truly built someone new.
Starfield
Bethesda’s Character Creation System, Perfected
No matter how you feel about Starfield as a whole, most players would agree that the character creation process was a strong point. Fallout 4 already had a fantastic and detailed character creation tool, and Starfield builds on that success with even better graphics and options than were available in Skyrim.
As a huge Bethesda fan, I was really impressed with the character creation in Starfield. It feels like they took everything they’ve learned from past games and put it all together. You can tweak your character’s face with so many options – it’s incredibly detailed! I also loved choosing traits. It was a nice change not having race-specific bonuses like in Skyrim, and these traits actually felt more meaningful to how you play the game than the life paths in Cyberpunk 2077. Some are just for flavor, but a lot of them really impact your gameplay experience.
Dragon Age: Inquisition
BioWare’s Character Creation At Its Finest
While Dragon Age: Inquisition doesn’t offer quite as much character customization as some other games, I think it’s still better than Cyberpunk in this area. It gives you more control over your character’s appearance, with a wide range of sliders to adjust every detail. You can really fine-tune things, even choosing specific colors for the inside and outside of the eyes.
While it doesn’t offer quite the same level of unrestrained customization as games like Cyberpunk, this RPG boasts a remarkably deep character creator – arguably even better than Baldur’s Gate 3, which limits your facial options. It’s potentially on par with Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Elden Ring, and we’ll discuss those later. Just be aware that your chosen race will have some limitations, so think carefully before you decide.
Elden Ring
From Stats To Appearances, Everything Is Detailed
The character creation in Elden Ring is incredibly detailed, letting you customize your character in a huge number of ways. When the game first launched, people were sharing some pretty wild creations – many made their characters look like Shrek! It offers a fantastic range of options, from hairstyles and scars to smaller details like blemishes. It’s a little unfortunate, though, that you’ll likely spend most of the game with a helmet or hood on, hiding all your hard work!
Seriously, the character customization is amazing. You can pick any color you want and create some truly bizarre, but still human-like, creatures. Plus, when you start, the classes aren’t super restrictive – they’re more like starting points for how you build your character. Once you get into the game and start finding better equipment, Ashes of War, spirit ashes, and all the other cool stuff, you can really tailor your character to exactly how you want to play.
Nioh 2
Preset Galore Is Likely To Follow Into Nioh 3
Let me tell you, the character creator in Nioh 2 is seriously impressive. As someone who loves making my character look just right in RPGs, I was blown away by how much detail you can tweak. It’s not just a few basic options – there are tons of sliders just for the face! You can even adjust things like posture, voice, height, and really customize the hair and eye color. And the hairstyles? Seriously gorgeous. I spent ages just making my perfect warrior.
Since Nioh 3 is expected in 2026, I’m hoping it keeps the excellent character creation options from previous games. It was great being able to design your character to be either strikingly good-looking or hilariously awful, before repeatedly sending them into battle against tough bosses.
Black Desert Online
One Of The Deepest Character Creation Systems In All Of Gaming
If you’re interested in massive online role-playing games, Black Desert Online is well-known for letting you create incredibly detailed and beautiful characters. It shares a similar polished, almost doll-like visual style with games like Lost Ark and Where Winds Meet, and offers extensive customization options – you can tweak everything from facial features and makeup to hairstyles and colors to create a truly unique character.
Black Desert Online offers an incredible amount of detail when creating your character’s face – potentially more than most games, rivaling titles like The Sims 4 and inZOI. This is especially noteworthy for a large multiplayer online role-playing game. While your character’s class and gender will limit some options, the game generally provides exceptional creative control, and the results are visually stunning.
Code Vein
Immense Anime-style Customization With An Emphasis On Fashion
Similar to Nioh 2, Code Vein is getting a sequel, Code Vein 2, planned for early 2026. Hopefully, it will include the incredibly detailed character creator from the first game. Code Vein really embraces an over-the-top art style, and that extends to how you create your character. You don’t just customize basic features like hair and eyes; you can dress them in amazing streetwear, add accessories, and even apply makeup – it’s almost a game within a game! Getting your character just right might take a while, but it’s a necessary step before you can actually start playing.
While you have some limits with facial structure, you can still create a unique character thanks to the extensive hair, accessory, and makeup options. These details make a huge impact, even when starting with a pre-made face. The clothing is also designed to be mixed and matched, letting you build the perfect main character. If you love the refined style of anime, you’ll find this game’s character creation tools incredibly valuable.
Dragon’s Dogma 2
A Game Of Absolute Freedom In Shaping Faces And Bodies
When it comes to character customization in fantasy RPGs, Dragon’s Dogma 2 really stands out – it’s even more detailed than Inquisition. The character creator feels similar in quality to those in Nioh 2 and Elden Ring, but personally, the characters in Dragon’s Dogma 2 seem a little more realistic and less strangely artificial than those in Elden Ring. Though, some players might actually prefer the look of Elden Ring’s characters.
The character customization in this game is amazing – there are tons of options, and they all look really well-made. I especially like how you can adjust the upper and lower body separately, letting you create more realistic and interesting body types. Everything is controlled with sliders, which is fantastic because it gives you precise control instead of being limited to pre-made choices. There’s a huge selection of hairstyles, beards, tattoos, and scars to really fine-tune your character’s look. Honestly, if you love character creation, this game is almost worth it for that feature alone, even though the overall gameplay isn’t as strong as games like Elden Ring.
