Some games demand extreme accuracy. In fast-paced shooters like Call of Duty, a headshot can instantly defeat an enemy. Similarly, stealth games like Metal Gear Solid often let you quickly take down opponents by sneaking up behind them and using a silent takedown.
RPGs aren’t usually known for requiring precise skills. Typically, players focus on improving their character’s stats—like strength or magic—to create a powerful build. However, some RPGs really emphasize skillful gameplay, where accurate timing, movement, and ability use are key to success.
Bloodborne
It’s All About Counters
FromSoftware’s games, like Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls, traditionally focused on defensive gameplay. However, Bloodborne shifted this approach. A new counter system now rewards aggressive play, encouraging players to attack instead of relying on shields.
Players can quickly defeat many early enemies by learning their attack patterns, and each successful defeat feels even better than the last. While bosses can also be overcome with this strategy, missing an attack carries a much greater risk.
Nioh
Know Your Stance
Nioh is a challenging action game similar to the Souls series, but set in feudal Japan with samurai combat. It was created by Team Ninja, the developers famous for the fast-paced and difficult Ninja Gaiden games. Battles in Nioh center around mastering different combat stances, which allow you to gain an advantage through powerful attacks or effective defenses.
Battles often feel like a guessing game, similar to rock, paper, scissors, where you try to figure out what an enemy is vulnerable to. You’ll need to experiment and learn enemy behaviors, and if you’re still stuck, changing your weapon might help you find an opening for a powerful attack.
Horizon Forbidden West
Breaking Down Mechanized Animals
Both Horizon Forbidden West and the first game feature excellent combat centered around bows and arrows. A carefully aimed, charged arrow often feels more accurate and strategic than using a gun in a typical shooter. Each enemy has specific weak points – like hidden armor plating or vulnerable sacs – and taking advantage of these weaknesses is key to winning battles.
As a player, I’m really excited about the combat! You can actually shoot weapons off of enemies and then use them yourself – imagine grabbing a huge Gatling Gun after taking someone down! And it’s not just about bows, either. There are cool gadgets like a slingshot that fires freezing bombs, which are awesome for temporarily disabling enemies and making them easier to take out.
Monster Hunter Wilds
Mastering Your Weapons
In Monster Hunter Wilds, like other Monster Hunter games, you’ll hunt monsters repeatedly to collect parts. These parts are then used to craft better weapons and armor. While some upgrades will be a big improvement, most will offer smaller boosts, often focused on things like elemental damage or making a weapon type more effective.
Focusing on hitting an enemy’s vulnerable spots is more effective than always having the strongest equipment. The game now includes a feature where weapons, particularly bows, can automatically target these weak points, and also help you collect more resources. When an enemy is hit in a weak spot, they’ll be briefly stunned, creating an opportunity to inflict more damage.
Front Mission 4
Mech Destroyer
Front Mission 4, like other core games in the Front Mission series, is a strategy RPG where you command giant robots called Wanzers on a grid-based battlefield. Before each battle, you can customize your Wanzers with various parts and weapons, choosing from long-range guns to close-combat blades.
When a Wanzer attacks, its systems randomly target an enemy’s body, legs, or arms. If a body part loses all its health, it becomes disabled. Players can learn skills to improve their aim and target specific areas more consistently. Destroying an enemy Wanzer’s weapon arm will stop it from attacking, while damaging its legs will slow it down, allowing players to customize their combat style through skill selection.
Vagrant Story
Mazes And Monsters
While technically connected to the world of Final Fantasy through the setting of Ivalice, Vagrant Story is a unique, standalone dungeon crawler. It features a special battle system that mixes turn-based strategy with real-time action. During battles, players can move freely around the arena to avoid enemy attacks.
When you attack, time slows down, letting you aim carefully. Smaller enemies usually only have one spot you can hit, but larger enemies have multiple weak points, like their body or legs – a bit like the targeting system in Front Mission 4.
Valkyria Chronicles
The Heat Of Battle
In Valkyria Chronicles, battles play out in a unique tactical RPG style. Players can move their units freely across the battlefield as long as they have enough action points. What makes it different is that enemies can attack at any time during this movement phase, creating a dynamic and reactive combat experience.
If a player wants to attack, the game will briefly pause, letting them carefully aim at different parts of the enemy. Hitting the head does extra damage, but it’s harder to do. Even enemy tanks have vulnerable spots, like the engine, that players can target for increased effect.
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
Two Brothers, One Goal
I absolutely loved how Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga let me control both Mario and Luigi at the same time! It’s really cool moving them around with the D-Pad. What’s even better is how simple the battles are – I just use the A and B buttons to attack and defend, and the D-Pad picks what move I do. It’s so easy to get into!
Becoming more powerful through leveling up and stronger attacks can help, but this RPG, like many Mario RPGs, really rewards skillful timing and counters. Understanding how enemies attack – and knowing when to strike back, like jumping on a Goomba – is much more effective than simply having powerful gear or a high level.
Shadow Hearts: Covenant
Behold, The Judge
Shadow Hearts: Covenant is a role-playing game with turn-based battles. Each character has a special attack linked to their Judgment Ring. During attacks, players need to hit specific spots on a spinning wheel to make their attacks more powerful.
Landing attacks at just the right moment to pull off powerful critical hits can be challenging, much like perfectly stopping the gas pump. This detail in Shadow Hearts: Covenant makes battles more interesting than in many turn-based games, and the game’s unique story—inspired by an alternate version of World War I—adds to the experience.
Resonance Of Fate
Channeling Action Movies
Resonance of Fate stands out with a uniquely challenging and rewarding battle system. Players control a team of only three mercenaries – Zephyr, Vashyron, and Leanne – throughout the game, and each character has their own special abilities.
During combat, players aim at opponents, and a line shows where the shot will go. It’s important to avoid shooting through your teammates, as this will cancel the attack. While skillful shots are good, it’s safer to ensure you hit your target, and with practice, you’ll improve your aim.
